About the Author

I'm a father, grandfather, and a pastor who desires to see children enter the kingdom of heaven. I want to pass along my experiences with raising children and as a long time Sunday school teacher, so that they might enter into a permanent relationship with Jesus Christ and believe on Him (Acts 16:30-31). I must say that they have taught me more than I may have ever taught them. This book attempts to fulfill the Great Commission and can be used for children and adults (Matt.28:18-20/Acts 1:8).

"How to Present the Gospel to Young Children" is an inspiring must-read for Sunday School teachers, Moms, Dads and grandparents. Wellman speaks with the voice of experience, having taught third and fourth grade Sunday School for a number of years. The intention of "How to Present the Gospel" is to persuade us to see things from a child's perspective in whatever we say and do.

Mr. Wellman very wisely points out that to teach children well, we must understand them well. We need to look at things from a kid's-eye-view. Does that mean getting down on your knees so you can see what the world looks like when you're only 3 feet tall? Yes, that's exactly what the author did.

Understanding a child's perspective includes the realization that kids are concrete and literal thinkers. A child who is told that Adam and Eve sinned when they ate fruit from the tree of life might well conclude that fruit eating is sinful, without more explanation. A child who is asked if she wants Jesus to come into her heart may think she has to have surgery. It has happened, and Wellman tells us all about it in this straightforward approach to a child's spiritual education. He emphasizes it is better to tell children to believe in Jesus Christ and commit their lives to Him.

The author even tackles one of the most difficult-to-grasp concepts of all: That Jesus is 100% God and 100% man. A child-friendly explanation compares it to the fact that the author is 100% Kansan, having been born in Kansas, and 100% American, having been born in America.

Expect to find many more gems in "How to Present the Gospel to Young Children." To quote Wellman, "Small wonder that Jesus emphasizes that unless you become as little children (that is, having a complete and full trust), then "...you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven" (Matt. 18:3). And if we try the understand the gospel as a little child would, we can present it with simplicity and love.

The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is because it's really written for "Tweens" and teens. My little girls are 7 and 5 and some of the things don't necessarily apply from this book. That said, in a few years they will so it's a good investment.

Do not buy this book. Instead by John MacArthur's book on Children and the Gospel since that is all that is referenced in this book.
