1.0 out of 5 stars Scandalous
This is apparently the source for the scandalous Seattle Public Schools definition of racism:
"Racism:
The systematic subordination of members of targeted racial groups who have relatively little social power in the United States (Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians), by the members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power...

This review is from: Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice: A Sourcebook (Paperback)
This book was very instrumental in helping me to educate and teach others about a topic that is hard to approach in today's society. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested inchanging the current status of society by encouraging others to critical evaluate their own actions, thoughts and behaviors.

If you haven't picked up this book, you need to. An excellent resource to begin your journey towards an oppression free society and an educated society. I highly recommend this book for anyone currently teaching in any type of classroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource, October 26, 2006
This review is from: Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice: A Sourcebook (Paperback)
This book is a magnificent work filled with easily executed exercises to demonstrate diversity and social justice practices. If you are needing a training exercise, an exploration of a topic such as gender or race, or possibly an activity for a classroom or business diversity training - this is your one stop shopping resource!

It also offers many practical examples of quizzes, activities and other items that can be used for whatever issue you want to talk about. The references and extensive resource list provide for further work in areas of race, gender, ability and other subjects on diversity. There are even suggested curriculum formats provided in the appendix.

I cannot say enough about the usefulness of this book, the ease of using it for all levels of knowledge and the variety of ways it can be used for diversity education.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have!, November 2, 2006
This review is from: Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice: A Sourcebook (Paperback)
A must have resource for teachers, administrators and counselors! This book, and its companion book "Readings for Diversity and Social Justice" easily explains the conceptual foundations for social justice coursework, and provides really practical resources including exercises, well-researched time-lines, visual representations that simplify complex concepts including charts, handouts, homework suggestions and other resources. I have referred to this very book on numerous occasions to design training that suits diverse audiences with great success! Depending on the amount of time I had to work with, I found especially helpful that in each section of the book, different options and modules were spelled out with recommended timeframes. Well done.

An avid reader (Houston, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice: A Sourcebook (Paperback)
This is apparently the source for the scandalous Seattle Public Schools definition of racism:
"Racism:
The systematic subordination of members of targeted racial groups who have relatively little social power in the United States (Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians), by the members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power (Whites). The subordination is supported by the actions of individuals, cultural norms and values, and the institutional structures and practices of society."

and cultural racism:

"Those aspects of society that overtly and covertly attribute value and normality to white people and Whiteness, and devalue, stereotype, and label people of color as "other", different, less than, or render them invisible. Examples of these norms include defining white skin tones as nude or flesh colored, having a future time orientation, emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology, defining one form of English as standard, and identifying only Whites as great writers or composers."

Read and make up your mind. It certainly differs from most definition of racism.

1.0 out of 5 stars Insanity, May 18, 2006
This review is from: Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice: A Sourcebook (Paperback)
For the sake of the future of this country we must hope that the insanity manifested here dosn't get passed on to the next generation. These are the people who maintain that believing in individualism as opposed to a "more collective ideology" is "Cultural Racism." So... down with the Declaration of Independence and the pursuit of happiness, down with self reliance, and, ultimately, up with Big Brother. This increasingly is the philosophy of the educational establishment. Heaven help us.
