Book Description

Children learn to read by reading and learn to write by writing. They learn to talk by talking. Most teachers are well aware that they ought to incorporate all four elements of language in their curricula: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. But it is reading and writing that they concentrate on. Listening and speaking are more difficult to structure. Drama can provide the perfect opportunity for students to practice listening and speaking in a context that is real for them.

Teaching Drama to Young Children has been written for teachers of children aged five to eight who would like to teach drama, but are not sure how to begin. The author gives specific instruction on setting up activities to develop children's imaginations, organizing abilities, confidence, and language. Teachers will quickly understand the content, form, and progression of a drama class so that they can develop their own ideas in response to the needs and interests of their own classes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super helpful book!, June 20, 2008
This review is from: Teaching Drama to Young Children (Paperback)
I am putting together a dramatics class for preschool children and wasn't sure how to begin. Mem Fox is a well-known name in early childhood circles, so I trusted that this book would be age-appropriate and imaginative. I was right. She's got several lessons to use that can be easily adapted to the interests and capabilities of ages from about 4 and up. Instead of complicated lines and staging, she's got simple pretend scenarios that build on each other as the lessons progress. I am SO glad I bought this book! BTW, I'm the WIFE of "FilthyD" and my name is JILL!

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Dated - there are better resources out there, October 3, 2011

This review is from: Teaching Drama to Young Children (Paperback)
I found the material to be extremely dated. All of her lessons focus around a magical witch. I don't want my class focusing on a witch for every game. I was really unimpressed, and glad I only paid the used price of $3 for it.
