"Teaching & Dramatizing Greek Myths" is for junior high teachers who want to inspire their students with a love for mythology while building reading, writing, and speaking skills. It is designed to help you turn your class into a joyful learning experience by dramatizing the myths. Thirteen Reader's Theatre plays bring the drama of Greek myths alive for your sutdents! Eight of these plays in the book are supported by teachers' notes, vocabularies, activites, tests, games, and puzzles.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The study of mythology offers students at the junior high level an experience in which they can stretch the imagination and simultaneously sharpen reading, writing, and speaking skills. Teaching and Dramatizing Greek Myths offers a novel approach to this popular subject--an approach which keeps students doing--using reading as a springboard to drama and to other activities designed to extend thinking skills.

Davidson, a literature teacher for many years, first dramatized a popular myth when she found little available to help her reinforce learning in a creative way. Her unique resource book contains dramatizations of a number of the most popular myths, including the Golden Fleece, Perseus, the Odyssey, and Daedalus. Five love stories and two adventure stories are also presented as one act plays.

Students read the plays first and discuss the literal interpretation, then answer questions involving inferences and creative thinking. Each section includes teachers' notes, transparency masters for making maps, activites and discussion questions, puzzles, a Mytho game (a quiz game like bingo), and tests with answer keys.

The dramatizations may take place on stage or as puppet shows. The scripts are flexible, limiting the number of players on stage at any one time to six, although there may be numerous parts. The author even includes plans for building a puppet theater.

Mythology is a high interest subject for students in grades 7, 8, and 9, and the plays and activites have also been used successfully with 5th and 6th graders. Davidson's creative approach makes the study of these classics a memorable experience for students and keeps them interested and occupied long after their interest in just plain reading has worn off. -- Publisher Comments --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, Fabulous, Fabulous!, April 4, 2000

This book has become my Bible for teaching mythology to seventh graders. The first year I used it, I was almost overwhelemed by the number of resources, but now (2 years later), I am absolutely loving it! The kids love the dramatic aspect of the unit, and I enjoy watching what they add to the plays. I recommend it highly!

This book is just right for a busy teacher doing a unit on mythology. The plays, the tests, the activities, the games, the questions: the author did all the work for me! I can tell she really taught this stuff; her material is perfectly pitched to the age and activity level. Satisfying to work with!

Ms. Davidson has provided an excellent overview of Greek myths complete with a wide variety of comprehensive exercises. I am most impressed by the original concept and well as the extensive glossary and lists of discussion questions teachers can use as they pick and choose from the many lessons.
