Book Description

July 12, 2002 020534271X 978-0205342716 3
Based on the belief that even small accommodations make a difference in the success of students with disabilities, this text provides readers with the knowledge, tools, and practical strategies that will empower them to spark learning in every student including students with disabilities, culturally diverse students, students with limited English proficiency, economically disadvantaged students, and other students at risk. Revised to reflect recent changes in the law and current terminology, the strength of the book continues to be its numerous learning activities and sample lessons addressing both elementary and secondary classrooms, as well as its four chapter unit on curriculum adaptations with specific strategies and activities for teaching reading, writing, mathematics, and content areas. The strong emphasis on professional planning and collaboration make it an excellent resource for all teachers. Designed for anyone interested in inclusion/mainstreaming, teaching students with disabilities in the regular classroom, and teaching exceptional learners.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The style is motivating, using plenty of examples and anecdotes about teachers.”

~ Audrey Edwards, Eastern Illinois University

“My favorite sections were the Tips for Teachers, the information found in these little sections were amazing and easy to locate. [...]  I enjoyed the interviews at the beginning of the chapter.  These were real stories about real teachers experiencing real problems and I felt that this too would help motivate students to read the chapter to see how these situations could be solved.”

~ Josephine Fritts, Ozarks Technical Community College

“The 60 Second Lesson’s content is excellent! [...] Besides the up-to-date content and the enjoyable and inviting conversational tone of the writing, the strong link provided between student characteristics and appropriate instructional strategies, the chapter opening and closing features, the number of resources shared for further exploration of topics, and the numerous and varied teaching supplements combine to make the Vaughn text excellent!”

~ Maureen Griffin, University of Wisconsin – Whitewater

“This textbook is well-written, very comprehensive, and grounded in research that I can respect and use as an educator.”

~ Philip J. Lanasa III, Cameron University

“I like this text best, because of its comprehensiveness and practical applications.”

~ Darcy Miller, Washington State University

“I especially like the inclusion of the chapters regarding teaching skill and content areas. [...] I really LOVED all of the recurring boxed features. I feel that the Vaughn, Bos, & Schumm text includes additional valuable features that may help facilitate deeper student understanding and future application of the content in the field.”

~ Beth Anne Pruitt, Eastern Kentucky University

I bought this book for a class in mainstreaming, required for my full credential in California. The book is well organized and easy to read. The information is valuable and I will refer to this book throughout my career as a teacher.

Even if you have used other ed psych books before, you will find this book to be quite good - it clearly states definitions in a way that you may not have understood before. An easy reading textbook!

Ordered this book used a week before Christmas. I received the package before the holiday, and it was in great shape! This is definitely a book that should be read by future educators and teachers already in the classroom.
