5.0 out of 5 stars Basketballcoach
I think that the majority of kids out there get poor instruction from fathers or, most likely, get no instruction at all. Any coach out there that complains that this tape shows a drill and yet that does'nt help him because he doesn't know what to do with "the other eight kids" is not going to get anything out of this tape. Fact is, that you must have some...

2.0 out of 5 stars too much talking; not enough instruction
I purchased this video hoping it would help me with my coaching of two youth league teams. One 10-11 year olds; the other 12-13 year olds. I've been coaching several years with good success and thought Mr. Wooden's video would heighten my knowledge of the game and game preparation. Frankly, I am dissapointed at the long-on-talk short-on-skills development contained...

5.0 out of 5 stars Basketballcoach, April 5, 2000
This review is from: Teaching Kids Basketball With John Wooden [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I think that the majority of kids out there get poor instruction from fathers or, most likely, get no instruction at all. Any coach out there that complains that this tape shows a drill and yet that does'nt help him because he doesn't know what to do with "the other eight kids" is not going to get anything out of this tape. Fact is, that you must have some basic knowledge of coaching and running practices for this tape to be truly effective; or you should see it as a way to indoctrinate good fundamentals (more importantly, good thinking and philosopy: "The two most important things in life are Love and Balance.") with your child. This is not a tape that will tell you how to coach a whole team.

Having coached through the high school ranks, I can tell you that Coach Wooden is closer to the heart of effective basketball than just about any person that has ever lived. He did, after all, win 10 national titles.

Although I'll take Wooden pearls of wisdon where I can, I wish he had done a tape for Coaches at higher levels. I wish he had "talked" more and shown us how he organized practices or taught his high post offense. That is the gold.

Alas, although the man is sharp as a tack, he is today 90 years old. This will have to serve as the only recorded evidence of a genius at his pallet, the basketball court. It leaves me wanting more of him.

I've been coaching several years with good success and thought Mr. Wooden's video would heighten my knowledge of the game and game preparation. Frankly, I am dissapointed at the long-on-talk short-on-skills development contained in it. Mr. Wooden goes on for long sections discussing tiresome aspects of the game...and the excessive length makes it useless for kids. It strains my attention span. The drills are one or two-on one; if I do these drills, I have eight other kids standing around bored. Good man, dated video style. p.s. The coach of Duke University (Mike K) has an excellent vido out for teaching kids although I can't find it on Amazon and someone borrowed mine. Help if you know how I can get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great choice for coaches, September 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Teaching Kids Basketball With John Wooden [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Many coaches today can gain a wealth of information from what Coach Wooden has to offer. Too many times have coaches gone in search of the "perfect" video. This video may not have all the drills you want or all the concepts of the game. It has something to offer that many others can't, Coach John Wooden's awesome perspective on the game of basketball. Excellent choice for a coach.

2.0 out of 5 stars Falls Short For Kids Training Film - May Help New Coaches, August 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Teaching Kids Basketball With John Wooden [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Not helpful as a kids training aid. Uses college players instead of kids to demonstrate skills. Kids can't relate to adults learning fundamentals. Also, too much talking. Great for a new coach who wants to see the correct way a skill should be applied or helpful tricks of the trade such as the protecting hand to defend against a cross over dribble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Video on Basketball Fundamentals, January 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Teaching Kids Basketball With John Wooden [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Excellent instructional video on basketball fundamental presented by Coach Wooden. Having played college basketball and coached, this video is a must for teaching basketball fundamentals. This video demonstrates the key to teaching basketball: Balance and Fundamentals. In addition, Coach Wooden's Book - Practical Modern Basketball is an excellent book - considered the bible for basketball coaching.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too much of John Wooden & not enough on drills., November 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Teaching Kids Basketball With John Wooden [VHS] (VHS Tape)
John Wooden is an excellent coach but fails to meet the needs of teaching kids this game. His examples are with adults and kids are edited into the video. Everything he says is true and valuable however not interesting for my 8 year old or myself as a new coach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great teaching video for caches and players, July 10, 2005

This review is from: Teaching Kids Basketball With John Wooden [VHS] (VHS Tape)
John Wooden's video Teaching Kids Basketball is a great video for coaches and players. It gives good insight to one of the greatest coaches in modern times. My video starts out kinda choppy, and skips, but then it plays fine after that. Coach Wooden has both college players and young kids in the video. I've read quit a few basketball books, but I get the most out of videos. I like to watch them again and again to learn the coach's strategy. Coach Wooden's drills are good for any coach to use during their practices. He's an excellent fundamentals coach. It's a pretty long tape 70 min in length.
