4.0 out of 5 stars Handy, August 5, 2003

This is a helpful guide to help a teacher plan lessons for language classes. Each lesson is easily adaptable to all ages and levels. The lessons are organized according to topic and actually go in order as if you are actually beginning a class, commencing with get-to-know-you exercises. There are a lot of fun activities included that coincide with each lesson's topic. There is a lot of information provided if you need a lot of help as well as considerable room for you to tailor a lesson to your class.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Teaching Resource for Beginning-Intermediate ESL Class, February 20, 2011

This review is from: Teaching Adult Second Language Learners (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) (Paperback)
This is a very useful, practical, flexible, and accessible book for planning lessons for adult ESL learners. The first two sections contain instructions on organizing an ESL classroom, planning lessons, and building community in the classroom. Section three has the ideas for classroom activities based on theme-units such as food, clothing, health, money, family, etc. Each unit will have ten or more activities. Each activity describes approximate time required, ability level, main teaching points, organization (groups or individuals), and preparation if any. My classes have really enjoyed the many information gap activities, sentence scrambles, and dictations. For example, all my students have enjoyed the Refrigerator Dictation. While it's ostensibly about food, it's also teaching listening skills, target vocabulary, directions and space relationships, writing skills, and more. Plus it's fun. I've found this book to be very helpful for weaving activities into a lesson. Highly recommended.
