5.0 out of 5 stars why didn't I think of this?, September 12, 2006
This review is from: Teaching Music with Purpose (Paperback)
Boonshaft's books ought to be required reading for any aspiring band director/music education major. His first book, 'Teaching Music with Passion,' received rave reviews. And 'Purpose' will be no different. For example - as a percussionist in high school and college bands, I can totally relate to his chapter "Percussionists: the Missing Peace?" What do you do with a group of kids who may not be playing for large chunks of the rehearsal? Is is realistic to expect them to behave when they're off by themselves in the back of the room? Boonshaft offers practical tips to solve these and other issues (including 'air drumming' and other things you would never have thought of.) His suggestions are useful for middle school/high school/ and college.

His writing style is humorous and accessible no matter what your level of music education. TWO THUMBS UP!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars All teachers should read this book., January 3, 2007
This review is from: Teaching Music with Purpose (Paperback)
This book is excellent! Not only is it an excellent resource for music teachers, the philosophies and ideas within this text can be used in all curriculums. This book also helps bridge the gap between music and more "acceptable" subjects of study. Every teacher should read this book so that they see how music should be taught, to have a better appreciation of music education, how the teacher/student relationship should be handled, and to become better teachers.

This is a fabulous book that should be required reading for every teacher, whether they teach music or anything else. It is touching, inspirational and uplifting. It renewed my excitement for teaching, and made me want to run back to school and teach. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry and it will make you realize how great it is to be a teacher. An amazing book!
