I ordered this book after I chuckled at the title. Now I am thankful and humbled that these great music educators took the time to author this book, and I have now started a book study with my colleagues to examine the topics covered. These world-class band directors share what they have done in their own schools and districts to have successful recruitment, musicianship and performances within their beginning-level band programs. The first chapters cover how to help students select an appropriate instrument, building good tone, teaching ear training, use of technology, and other topics. Following this is a resource guide including analyses of 52 pieces of Grade 1 music including background information on the composer, considerations for style and technical difficulty, and how to break the literature down and teach it effectively. This is classified as a textbook, but I would not have been able to grasp these concepts in college. I'm finding it useful in my first year back into teaching beginning winds.

Great Series of Band Literature,

My son - a MS band director - has the series with both the books and cds. The series outlines the best literature for each grade level - beginners through very advanced - using the standard grade 1-5 scale. The musicality on the cds is excellent and the books are insightful.
I am retired but wish these had been in print to use as a reference when I was teaching band.
