I ordered this book after I chuckled at the title. Now I am thankful and humbled that these great music educators took the time to author this book, and I have now started a book study with my colleagues to examine the topics covered.
These world-class band directors share what they have done in their own schools and districts to have successful recruitment, musicianship and performances within their beginning-level band programs. The first chapters cover how to help students select an appropriate instrument, building good tone, teaching ear training, use of technology, and other topics. Following this is a resource guide including analyses of 52 pieces of Grade 1 music including background information on the composer, considerations for style and technical difficulty, and how to break the literature down and teach it effectively.
This is classified as a textbook, but I would not have been able to grasp these concepts in college. I'm finding it useful in my first year back into teaching beginning winds.

My son - a MS band director - has the series with both the books and cds. The series outlines the best literature for each grade level - beginners through very advanced - using the standard grade 1-5 scale. The musicality on the cds is excellent and the books are insightful.

I am retired but wish these had been in print to use as a reference when I was teaching band.
