This book describes a model of clinical education in which nursing students receive 50% of their clinical experiences in the community--often in settings where no other kinds of health care services are available. The program was developed as part of the Kellogg Foundation's Community Health Education, Research, and Service project, which fosters academic-community health care partnerships. The book describes the issues challenging nurse educators in the face of a changing health care system and provides practical information on implementing community-based clinical experiences. The book includes valuable appendices of specific clinical activities and an evaluation of how these students differ from traditionally trained students after graduation. Peggy S. Matteson, PhD, RNC, is currently an associate professor teaching women's health, and Coordinator of the Nursing Education Program for minority students, at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. Among her previous appointments was a ten-year stint in the Northeastern University School of Nursing. Dr. Matteson is certified as a women's health nurse practitioner.
