4.0 out of 5 stars Foundations for the beginning English teacher.
Teaching by Principles provides an overview of the art of teaching English. Much of the book focuses on teaching English as a second language in the United States. However, there is much that a teacher of English as a foreign language could use, as well. The book provides some theory as well as practical advice and sample lessons. 1.0 out of 5 stars It was required for a class....
This is probably the most poorly written academic book I have ever read. It is required reading for my online CLAD/CTEL class. The author constantly uses jargon that he often does not even attempt to explain either by definition or by example. Do not buy this book unless required to for school purposes!

5.0 out of 5 stars A text written in everyday language, August 21, 2000

This book was my constant resource during my masters degree course in TESOL. No other book was more helpful and clearly written! If you do much reading in the field you will know that there are a great many authors in the TESOL field whose writing style is immensely dry, convoluted and tedious. Not so here...By all means get this book! You will certainly not regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it as a coursebook, March 3, 2008
While at times this book gets into some technical terms, most of it is in everyday english, or at least everyday for a student studying language teaching. It is an easy read, that doesn't put me to sleep like many other linguistic books on my plate. Brown adds enough humor and examples that with a good instructor this textbook seems to be pretty stand alone. The one complaint I have with it; the author plugs a lot of his own work, now he may be qualified, and published some good stuff, but it is almost like getting an advertisement while you read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely clear & thoroughly informative, July 18, 2009

This review is from: Teaching by Principles: An Interactive Approach to Language Pedagogy (3rd Edition) (Paperback)
Teaching by Principles by Brown is an excellent resource book for teachers. In fact, it's the best book I have encountered so far which provides a detailed outlined of most aspects of teaching English as a second language. I'm currently studying for a Master's degree in TESOL and have found this book well set-out and very easy to understand, compared with other books on TESOL teaching such as Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching by Richards & Rodgers and The Elements of Language Curriculum by Brown himself, just to cite two examples.
If you are taking a course in TESOL or are even just currently teaching English overseas (I'm teaching English in Japan) - this book will provide you with much insight into the history of teaching and various teaching methods as well as providing much food for thought on how you can improve your own classes. Highly recommended!

Please see review "It was required for a class by Ruth F." My sentiments exactly! I am a teacher and had to buy this book for an ELL endorsement program. It made me feel like an English language learner myself! The author makes the most contextually complexing statements, full of jargon, but forgets to explain what he is talking about. Interesting if you need to read about a lot of research, but totally lacking for classroom application. For a excellently written book on ELL, read Mary Cappellini's Balancing Reading & Language Learning or Supporting the Literacy Development of English Learners by Young&Hadaway.
