This review is from: Teaching Reading to Children With Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Teachers (Topics in Down Syndrome) (Paperback)
I have taught 5 children with down syndrome how to read, based on the information I recieved from this book. I work in the school district with children with DS and tutor them after school as well. I could never have had the success I have had without the information the author provides in this book.

A must have book for every child with Down Syndrome!,

This is the only book that I have found that will allow you the parent an easy, successful, positive way for you to teach your child how to read. The methods are easy for you to do and the child is successful and wants to keep on learning new words. Don't miss this one. And don't rely on anyone but yourself to teach your child to read.

It Works!!!,

I know a young lady with Down Syndrome who was taught how to read using this system. She is now an adult and reads the newspaper every day. Especially the baseball box scores! I know this works. I can't wait to see how my son does with it. He is 5 1/2 and just started Kindergarten. He has DS and when I showed the book to his teacher she immediately knew she had to have it. Thank you Pat Oelwein!

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I wrote a previous review in 2000 and thought it was high time for an updated review. In 2000 I had taught 5 children with Down syndrome to read using the principles from this book. I can now happily say that that number has increased to well over 200 children and teens! This is an amazing book which gives one the blueprint to teach their learner with Down syndrome to read. Whether I am giving a presentation to a large group or working one on one with a family, the first thing I do is recommend this book. Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome is full of useful and practical well researched information that is easy to follow. I also would like to recommend the author's other book Literacy Skill Development for Students With Special Learning Needs A Strengths-Based Approach by Leslie Broun and Patricia Oelwein Both books are a MUST for all parents and teachers of children with different learning styles.

Read it early,

I love this book. I wish I'd gotten it when my son was little! It provides great information about how to teach kids with DS to read, but also has great stories of real kids and their accomplishments. I'd recommend that anybody with a DS child buy the book early (when their baby is little), and read the first few chapters. It'll inspire them, mitigate some of the worries they have about their child's future, and introduce them to the important concept that although people with DS are generally slower to develop, their learning disabilities can be mitigated by teaching them in a way that is effective for the way they think (e.g., kids with DS are visual learners), rather than the "standard" way. My four year old has actually had better success with the Love and Learning videotapes and books than the flash card approach described in the book, but the principal is pretty much the same.

it is extremely helpful, in only 2 months my daughter at 6 years old was up to 30 site words without picture cues. (Her first attempt at actually reading) The book contains alot of helpful activities, simply spelled out in step by step directions for anyone to understand.

My son is almost 3 (he has DS). So far I have only read the first few chapters but already I have gotten my money's worth out of the book in understanding how he learns. I've also gotten a better idea of how to help him with pre-reading skills and I know his teachers in school will want a copy of this book. This is a must have for parents who love reading and want their child to enjoy it as well.

This is a simple, step-by-step program that can help parents and teachers teach any child with developmental disabilities to read. It is especially effective for children with Down syndrome. She uses concrete examples and pictures. I can't wait until "Teaching Math..." comes out.

I have used this book quite a bit with my 9 year old daughter with DS, since she was about 5. It is very well written and encouraging, full of information. I have given it to all my daughter's teachers as there are activities that can be done in a classroom.
