5.0 out of 5 stars A new edition providing reproducible activity masters and sample lesson models, December 9, 2008
This review is from: Teaching Reading Sourcebook 2nd Edition (Perfect Paperback)
Reading is a fundamental skill that is the foundation for academic achievement and 'real-world' success. Now in a significantly updated, revised and expanded second addition, "Teaching Reading Sources continues to be a core instruction manual for classroom teachers and administrators charged with the creation and implementation of reading instruction curriculums. A part of the 'Core Literacy Library', "Teaching Reading Sourcebook" begins with an introductory overview to assessing reading levels and instruction, then comprehensively addresses the issues of word structure (both English and Spanish); print awareness; letter knowledge; and phonemic awareness. The section focusing on decoding and word study includes chapters on phonics, irregular word reading, and multisyllabic word reading. Additional sections address reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Of special note is the section 'Comprehensive Reading Model' offering a three-tier model of instruction. Enhanced with the inclusion of sample tests, activity masters, and teaching charts, "Teaching Reading Sourcebook" also features a 'Connect to Theory Answer Key', extensive references, and a comprehensive index. With this new edition providing reproducible activity masters and sample lesson models, "Teaching Reading Sourcebook" is a strongly recommended addition to professional, school district, and academic library Reading Instruction reference collections.

This review is from: Teaching Reading Sourcebook 2nd Edition (Perfect Paperback)
This book is one of only four textbooks judged acceptable for a reading course by the National Council on Teacher Quality. It is science based, with clear statements of what, when, why and how to teach. Reproducible reading texts, activity masters and teaching charts are included. Research-based best practices are carefully described for each component of reading instruction, from print awareness to comprehension. Lesson models of explicit instruction include sample teaching scripts and examples of corrective feedback. This is an outstanding book for anyone who wants to learn the science of reading.
