Book Description

The foundation for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education begins in the early years. This book provides more than ninety activities and learning center ideas that seamlessly integrate STEM throughout early childhood classrooms. These hands-on STEM experiences enhance cooking, art, and music activities, block play and sensory table exploration, and field trips and outdoor time. Information on assessment and early learning standards is also provided.

Sally Moomaw, EdD, has spent much of her career researching and teaching STEM education. She is an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati and the author of several early education books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Provides background, lots of ideas and examples April 15, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you are an early childhood educator looking for some help engaging your students in STEM activities without having to break the bank or use up all your spare time, this could be the book for you. After providing some helpful background on what STEM is, this book is full of easily-implemented, age-appropriate activities that will help you bring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into your classroom in meaningful ways. There are chapters on STEM Learning Centers, STEM throughout the Classroom, STEM Outdoors, STEM in a Project-Centered Curriculum, Quick STEM Activities, and STEM-Based Field Trips. Each activity includes necessary materials; a description; a summary of the science and mathematics content; connections to technology and engineering; and comments and questions you can use to support inquiry with your students. I recommended this book to teachers with whom I worked in an Integrating Mathematics and Science in Grades K-8 Professional Learning Community, and participants who used activities were enthusiastic about the resulting learning in their classrooms. This is a well-written and useful teacher's resource book.

Love the ideas in this book, though I need to do a bit of woodworking to implement some of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great activity book for kids! April 13, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is fantastic! It's basically a science recipe book for children. All of the activities have clear directions and list why they help develop math and science skills. I highly recommend it for teachers in 4+ age groups. Some activities are appropriate for 3 year olds but not all. Even if you're a mom looking for more fun, educational activities to do with your kids, this is a great book to use!

This book is tailored to young children, around K-8, in a classroom setting. The classroom oriented activities include STEM Learning Centers, STEM field trips, STEM for Project-Centered curriculum, STEM integrated into the classroom, STEM outdoors, and Quick STEM activities. Each activity uses at least two of the STEM disciplines. The activities in this book are relatively simple, and can be done at home. There are lists of supplies needed, and a description of how to do the activity. Most of the ideas can be done outside of the classroom. Younger, advanced children can also do some of these activities with adult supervision. I was looking for a book that would apply to high school age students. I could only use the type of concepts investigated as a starting point to create new lessons, so this book did not really work well for my situation.
