This edition updates the arguments and suggestions about practice in primary science in the light of the developments in the four years since the second edition was published. The overall aim of the book is to help teachers to develop children's understanding through enquiry. The topics covered include: how teachers can help children to construct ideas; the importance and meaning of progression in learning science; formative assessment as part of teaching and learning; the opportunities provided by using computers and ICT; making the best use of practical activities; the role and language and discussion; and the value of helping children to reflect on how they are approaching problems.

Great classroom scenes,

This book has some excellent classroom vignettes to read and discuss with preservice teachers. For inservice teachers the scenes might be a place to start with ideas for teaching.
The second chapter goes into a lot of detail about how the British curriculum came to be, while this has strong parallels with US curriculum development it might be a chapter for skimming rather than studying. Overall Wynn Harlen's publications are very thought provoking and have great depth of thinking.
