4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book With Some Unique Ideas, March 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Teaching the Skills of Soccer: 900 Exercises & Games (Paperback)
This book is a collection of games, drills, and individual exercises for soccer.

I found it to be good, but not great.

Pros:
- Well organized by skill developed (ball control, shooting, etc)
- Description of each exercise includes not only the workings of the exercise, but also the materials (balls, cones, etc) needed, and their estimated difficulty
- Every item includes a diagram
- Several ideas not found in other books (example, there are several variations on the traditional give-and-go pass)
- 900 different exercises!!!

Cons:
- There are 3 skills on each page, so the diagrams are small. This makes interpreting some of the more complex ones a hassle.
- Some of the drills are overly complex
- Probably 150 or so of the 900 are just variations on another item already listed (for example, inside of the foot passing with 2 people and inside of the foot passing with 3 or more people)
- The biggest drawback: A lot of the activities listed involve "cones and lines"; which good coaches generally try to avoid.

Overall, some of the details and readability could be improved, but still definitely a good book. I highly recommend this book for coaches looking to add variation to their practices.

When I began to think about the content of this book, I had only two clear ideas: one was that this would be a work about all the different technical elements that form what we know as soccer technique, and the other was that it must at the same time be extensive, varied, and a source of information for all those people (coaches, fitness trainers and Physical Education professors) who as I, move, work, and love this world of physical activity and sports and especially Soccer. Read the first page
