From the Author

This book was written in behalf of all secondary school teachers. It serves as an instructional guide for novice teachers and teachers-to-be. It is also a vehicle for evaluation and change for those who are already experienced professionals of the classroom. The content material reflects thirty-three years of personal experience in teaching and supervision. During your careers you will discover teaching methods and techniques not discussed in this manual but which work to your satisfaction. This text, therefore, is not to be viewed as dogma but only as a launching pad toward classroom competency. The book is designed to assist all teachers in making others receptive to information. A specific aim, however, is to give the new or inexperienced teacher a "jump start" in the classroom by offering him/her a foundation upon which to build classroom experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Great Book for Teachers!", October 22, 2000
By A Customer
A candid and extremely helpful teaching guide especially for the beginning secondary school teacher. Content is well organized with clear explanation and suggestions of lesson components necessary for effective instruction. Emphasis is placed on preventive discipline, classroom management, lesson planning/lesson implementation, testing techniques, teaching across-the-curriculum and different lesson type models. There are also very useful teacher forms. A teacher's must have book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Basically Useless, July 27, 2008
This very thin book has virtually nothing you didn't get in your credential classes or could figure out on your own. There is nothing whatever about "classroom management" as it is usually defined - keeping the idiots from taking over the class.

Have a lesson plan, a seating chart, a few other items. Even there it is it inadequate for today's class room. For example: he says let the students sit where they want on the first day! Disaster - as I found out the hard way. They will all sit with their friends and start chatting right away. Instead you assign seats and put each name on the chart on "post-its" so you can move them around frequently - weekly for the first month or so - as you figure out who needs to be up front, who can't be together, etc.

Here's a tip. They hate detention. Even five minutes at lunch time helps turn a creep into a nice kid. Another tip - YOU dismiss the class, not the bell. There is no reason for them to be standing by the door five minutes before the bell rings waiting to exit. Last tip - foul language is immediate suspension from class for a day and a call home. Miss a test because you were suspended - too bad.
