Easy to find info,
By J Carpenter (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley (Hardcover)
I love the way this book is set up. Its set up by topic, which makes for easy reference use. Some of his teachings are inspired, others are a reminder of common sense we may have dismissed. He doesn't beat around the bush, but gets straight to the point. Its a great book whether you read it cover to cover or just search out a specific topic from time to time.

A LAtter-day Prophet Speaks!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley (Hardcover)
This book is key for understanding Latter-day Saints and understanding their current President, Gordon B. HInckley. His three-decades experience as an assistant to the Twelve, as an Apostle, as counselor in the First Presidency, and as the fifteenth Prophet, Seer and Revelator for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is distilled topically in this book. It is a handy reference for anyone wishing to see what he has said about most any topic, timely and timeless. From abortion to Zion, this book is the true source for true doctrine about what Latter-day Saints belive and teach.

Teachings of the world leader of the Church of Jesus Christ,
By
This review is from: Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley (Hardcover)
This book is a collection of teachings by the current (2002) president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Gordon B. Hinckley. For members of the church, this is an essential book in understanding what our living prophet has to say, be it on Abortion, Baptism, or Child Abuse. It also includes a section where President Hinckley eulogizes past presidents of the church. For non-members, this book can serve as an introduction to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Most of the books out there are decidedly against the Church. This book allows you to read what the Saints themselves believe, as taught by their own leader. The book is arraigned by topic, and has quotes of various lengths on the different subjects, as opposed to a collection of conference talks. President Hinckley was blessed with a wonderful capacity to speak and to speak clearly, unlike myself. His words are a joy to read and his counsel is a joy to follow.

This review is from: Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley (Hardcover)
One of the best teachings books I've read. Many short and to the point quotes that not only inspire but answer many questions that come to mind in daily life. Book also has an electronic version that is great for having around in you Palm or Pocket PC.

I quote the words of Elder David B. Haight in stating "With all the inspiration and love that I possess, I testify that Gordon B. Hinckley was foreordained to become the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; to be the mouthpiece of God on the earth at this time; and to lead God's people as prophet, seer, and revelator." We can all learn from his teachings.

Beautiful, but....,
This review is from: Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley (Hardcover)
This is the pinnacle of thought from one of the greatest men on the earth. In short I would have to say that all, non-LDS and LDS, should have this piece of work. My only issue with it is that it cannot be comprehensive as new teaching are coming from President Hinckley.

All fluff, no substance,
By
This review is from: Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley (Hardcover)
This book is worthwhile to read (barely), but not for the reasons listed by previous reviewers. It contains none of the distinctive theology of mormonism. Hinckley is more analogous to a CEO than a prophet and his writings are reflective of that. He dances around important issues, makes broad generalizations and certainly says nothing prophetic. I own this book and from the day I bought it as a mormon to now it is equally useless. At least the writings of the early "prophets" like Brigham Young and Joseph Fielding Smith had some substance and took some stands, however ill-gotten they may have been. No wonder it is difficult to get the early writings. A prime example of Hinckley's waffling is on the abortion questions. On the one hand it is wrong, on the other it is sometimes OK, on the third, check with local leaders and do whatever seems right. Abortion is either wrong or it is not. Much like Hinckley lying on national TV regarding the Mormon churches view of men becoming gods, this book is full of feel good sayings that amount to nothing new. Besides, no matter what he says he or any subsequent "prophet" can change their minds as they see fit later on. On second thought, this book isn't worthwhile to read. Find some old copies of Bruce McConkie's Mormon Doctrine or Brigham Young's Journal of Discourses. They were flat out wrong but at least they took a stand.
