5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, rich book, August 30, 2009

This review is from: The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan: The Power of the Spoken Word (Paperback)
I like to open this book at random when my mind is disorganized or anxious. Reading a few of Yogi Bhajan's aphorisms always re-balances me. Besides pointing to our inner hidden wisdom, he offers very practical philosophical guidelines. A few very specific meditation practices are detailed. My relationship to my body has also been transformed by this book.

As a student of philosophy, I consider one of the most amazing accomplishments in this book to be the aphorism about the difference between animals and humans. Various philosophers have made attempts that have all come up short, to my mind. Yogi Bhajan has defined the essence of the distinction once and for all (I'm not going to give it away here).

The only criticism I could imagine against this book is that it is limited insofar as it is metaphysical. Ken Wilber's integral post-metaphysics has shown that it is inappropriate to absolutize metaphysical constructs because different traditions enact different realizations that are equally valid. Yogi Bhajan does not seem to give space to alternate paths besides kundalini yoga - but, as a teacher and master of this yoga, why should he? Like Aurobindo's metaphysics, it is towering and powerful.

I recommend this book to every human being.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hard but loving teacher, November 1, 2009

This review is from: The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan: The Power of the Spoken Word (Paperback)
This is a great book for anyone who is looking into or already on a spiritual journey. Yogi Bhajan is the great Yoga master who became the master of Kundalini Yoga, which up to that point had been an esoteric practice known by only a few great masters in India. He felt it was his duty to share this practice with the world, and he moved to the United State, where he eventually founded the organizations 3HO and The Kundalini Research Institute, which are based in New Mexico. He spent his life teaching Kundalini Yoga and sharing his wisdom with students all over the world. This book is a great testament to his teachings, which are presented in short lessons, ranging from one sentence to a couple of paragraphs. They are presented in several chapters grouped by topic, such as Word, Love, Realization, God, etc. There is much wisdom here, and his words literally cut through you in many cases. Indeed, reading this book is like sitting down with a stern but loving teacher, as you may find that many of these sayings force you to confront behaviors that you know you engage in but shouldn't. There is no room for excuses, cop outs or crutches in Bhajan's world. You are either a committed student, or you are not. Either way, it is an essential book for anyone looking to understand more about who and what they are, the nature of reality, the power of the word, and the nature of devotion. Much like the lessons provided on the flaps of Yogi tea bags, these lessons can be used to help brighten your day, or they can be meditated on deeply to come to a better understanding of life and the spirit. All in all, a great book well worth referencing whenever you need a little boost or perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meant to be read out loud., October 26, 2008

This review is from: The Teachings of Yogi Bhajan: The Power of the Spoken Word (Paperback)
I was at the class when Yogi Bhajan introduced this book.
It is a living example, in English, of the yogic science of Naad, Sound Current.
Read it out loud. Emphasize your tongue and lip movement. Be precise in your pronunciation. You are stimulating 81 meridian points in the roof of the mouth; using the finest acupuncture tool you were born with, your tongue.
You may find sentences "mixed up" to the normal way of English. This is not a book of grammar, but a book of self stimulation unto Infinity.
If you don't understand a passage, read it 14 times.
If you want the full height, depth and breadth of certain passages or chapters, read them each day without a break, for a minimum of 40 to 1,000 days.
The science of Kundalini Yoga will accurately help you transform your consciousness. This book is a great tool in the library of yogic teachings.
