Book Description

June 5, 2012
When Richard Thompson, creator of the cartoon strip Cul de Sac, learned that he had Parkinson’s disease, the entire cartoon community was moved. From other cartoonists to fans, the urge to “do something” was overwhelming. Enter Chris Sparks, friend of and webmaster for Richard, who came up with the idea of joining the Team Fox effort. Having read two of Michael J. Fox’s books, he knew about the foundation, which made him think of creating a Team Cul de Sac to honor Richard and to raise money for and awareness about PD. He set up the team with the foundation and began the quest to create a book that contributors would donate their original art to be included in the book and to be auctioned off later. All of the auction’s and a portion of the book's profits will be donated to Team Fox.

The response to Chris’s call for art has been impressive. From indie cartoonists to noted syndicated, editorial, and magazine cartoonists to graphic novel artists, illustrators, and sheer Cul de Sac fans, the assortment of cartoon styles paying homage to Cul de Sac and Richard Thompson in Team Cul de Sac is truly inspiring.

"Team Cul De Sac: Cartoonists Draw The Line At Parkinson's"
Edited by Chris Sparks
(Andrews McMeel, 2012)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cartoonist Richard Thompson is the creator of the daily news strip, "Cul De Sac," a delightfully loopy series that is the creative heir to "Dennis The Menace," "Little Lulu," "Peanuts" and "Calvin & Hobbs," a cartoon centered in the world of children that rings both weird and true at the same time. The strip debuted in 2004 and has gained popularity for its wit, intelligence and celebratory chaos.

A few years ago, Thompson was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and recently (in 2012) took time off his daily duties to seek treatment for the illness. Thompson's high standing in the creative world has led to this book, which is both an homage to his work and a benefit for the Michael J. Fox foundation, which is researching a cure for Parkinson's. Dozens of cartoonists from various creative and professional strata have contributed their work, each putting their own spin on the Cul de Sac characters. It's a fun book - highlights include a painting from Thompson's patron saint, Bill Watterson (a portrait of Petey Otterloop) as well as numerous mash-ups of Cul De Sac and other strips. Fans will find a lot to enjoy here - Thompson's humor translates well in the hands of others, and the appeal and universality of his characters becomes plain when we see them through the eyes of the many members of Team Cul De Sac. Recommended! (DJ Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain childrens' book reviews)

5.0 out of 5 stars The gift of gifts September 11, 2012

From the first page to the last, one can't help but see the true community artist share with one another, despite the vast differences in the expression of their hearts and words within the confines of its pages. It was a pleasure to be part of such a perfect project. It was an honor to be included with so many astoundingly talented fellow human beings. It was humbling to know this book may help better peoples lives in some way. But it won't be perfect and it will honor no one and it won't better anyones life if stays on the shelf. So, in this, it is my prayer that everyone helps make it all these things and so much more by getting a copy for themselves and their loved ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tribute to Richard thompson July 23, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Richard Thompson is a comic who tells a story about an average family. What makes this strip remarkable is in the empathy he has for these people. Cul De Sac is a wonderful strip. Team Cul De Sac is a chance for Mr Thompson's contemporaries to pay tribute to the comic and raise money for a good cause. We have seen tributes slipped into strips before such as Patrick McDonnel inserting the Peanuts characters in a museum looking at a painting while Linus is Looking at the image of Earl the dog. This time it is a dedicated panel where the artist draws Cul De Sac characters into their own strip or medium. Alice, her brother Pety and their long suffering parents have a complete makeover in the hands of other artists. It is a wonderful tribute and a great way to be introduces to new artists.
