Book Description

November 1998
Team Racing is a sailing match between two teams with 3 boats in each team.  It is a sport in its own right, is fun, and is an excellent way to improve your boathandling and tactics in other forms of racing.  The tactics are very interesting – rather like chess at sea.  The manoeuvres are fierce.

This book describes those tactics and the way the rules influence those tactics.  This second edition fully updates to take into account the new 2001-2004 rules

Whether you race with two, three or four boats per team, in dinghies or keelboats, this manual will help you win.  It covers:

  • Team strategy and tactics
  • Team skills eg starting, stopping at marks, converting to a better combination
  • The individual skills you need

This second edition has been completely revised for the 2001-2005 Rules, there are more pages, photos have been added, new sections show how to organise your team strategy, and key manoeuvres are covered in much greater depth.

This review is from: Team Racing for Sailboats (Paperback)
This is the best and most up to date book on Team sailing and all facets to do with the sport. It is a valuable tool for teachers and sail masters in educating students on effective methods to enhance enjoyment and success in this sport. The book includes tactic diagrams and a large section given to pre-race manouveres .

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for umpires, June 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you are a team racing umpire this is a must read. If you understand how teams use rules and tactics to their advantage it is easier for you as an umpire to anticipate their next moves. You will better understand how skippers and crew operate in a team race thus making it easier to make the right calls as an umpire.

The book is well structured, well written and has a lot of illustrations to support the written text. References to the team racing rules help as well. Keep in mind, though, that the copy I've got, has been published in 2002 and the team racing rules have evolved since then. Some of the tactics are more refined these days as well. It would be great if an updated edition would become available soon.

In summary this book is strongly recommended literature not only for the serious team racing sailor but for umpires who want to do a good job as well. The book is well invested money.
