5.0 out of 5 stars The East Coast is back!
This album is so much better than I expected. Where most east groups who debuted or broke out a few years ago have fallen off enormously (Boot Camp, Mobb Deep), this album amazed me. The beats are absolutely wicked, especially considering the absence of premier. And the rhymes, well, Lil' Dap is dope, Malachi is just Malachi, simple delivery, not particularly...

3.0 out of 5 stars Group Home- A Tear for the Ghetto
Group Home's second album is "A Tear for the Ghetto" (1999). Four years after there first this is another strong release from the duo of Lil Dap and Melachi. There last album was fully produced by DJ Premier, this time its only got one track from Premo (The Legacy) and lesser known producers like 8-Off, Rad, Buggy Eye,Maratta, Jiv Pos and Lil Dap looking after alot of...

The beats are absolutely wicked, especially considering the absence of premier. And the rhymes, well, Lil' Dap is dope, Malachi is just Malachi, simple delivery, not particularly brilliant, but catchy rhymes--a million times better than DMX, who you might say is his bastard offspring. Check this album to regain some faith in East Coast hardcore.

3.0 out of 5 stars Group Home- A Tear for the Ghetto, October 20, 2003
This review is from: A Tear for the Ghetto (Audio CD)
Group Home's second album is "A Tear for the Ghetto" (1999). Four years after there first this is another strong release from the duo of Lil Dap and Melachi. There last album was fully produced by DJ Premier, this time its only got one track from Premo (The Legacy) and lesser known producers like 8-Off, Rad, Buggy Eye,Maratta, Jiv Pos and Lil Dap looking after alot of the production which was surprisingly good. "Da Real Ghetto", track two vibes well, and Group Home comes positive talking about educating and looking after the children. My favourite track on this one is "Street Life", just one of those ill cuts I can play over and over. Next two tracks feature Guru of Gang Starr, both are decent. Some of the middle tracks dont really stand out for me, street tracks like, "Keep Rising" "12 O'Clock" and "Oh Sweet America" pick things up again. Altoghether this is another good album, Group Home benefits from some solid beats, and have improved there content on this one. A good example of this for me is "We Can Do This" where they drop some positive lyrics and a memorable chorus of "there aint no limit to life". Group Home most likely will never be one of those groups to blow, over the years they have some dropped memorable cuts, recommend checking out "Livin Proof" if you liked this album. Havnt heard of any new music coming from them as a group lately , though I have found a few Lil Dap solo appearances which are good.

5.0 out of 5 stars New York's Finest!, January 27, 2000
This review is from: A Tear for the Ghetto (Audio CD)
I'm bobbing my head to "Sun For a Reason" as I write. This album surprised me with its overall content minus the genius of Premier. Not only are the beats and music incredible, but son, Malachi and Lil' Dap have stepped up to the plate lyrically. The stories vividly describe Brooklyn's street life. If you want beats and rhymes that have DMX sounding like a pre-schooler on Riker's Island, check "Tear For the Ghetto",, The Legacy baby, no doubt!

2.0 out of 5 stars A noticeable falloff, March 1, 2004
This review is from: A Tear for the Ghetto (Audio CD)
For as amazing as the first "Livin' Proof" release was, I expected a whole lot more. This release really disappoints if you liked the debut.

And if you'd never heard the debut before, you wouldn't be impressed at all by this one.

And this is probably due to one missing piece: DJ Premier. With DJ Premier producing, he could even make me sound respectable!

So this album sounds very average, very non-memorable. Very generic, nothing new is added here. Overall very disappointing, but at least you can get it really cheap used!

No production by Premier? Must suck... Nope! Damn, this album is off the hook. Some of the best beats I've heard in some time with some seriously catchy hooks. A definite underground gem.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible album, December 14, 2006
This review is from: A Tear for the Ghetto (Audio CD)
This album sucked badly. I didn't like it at all and Melachi The Nutcracker didn't rap that much on any of the songs. It sounded like a Lil Dap solo album LOL.

5.0 out of 5 stars old school with heart, July 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Tear for the Ghetto (Audio CD)
There was a time when rap wasn't about bank accounts and big cars. It had somethin' to say, and the beats went along with the rhymes. the old school days are gone, and now we have those egotistical exploiters Puff Daddy, Jay-Z, Notorious BIG and the like. and now when some kid blasts a rap tune outta his car, new or old school, they'll get the Wigger stereotype. It's a shame, really. but there are still those out there making a difference, still exposing the pigs, presidents and imposters. Group Home is the grand daddy of them all. they got everything a lyricist should have. NWA-like rhymes and incredibly head bopping beats, this is the real thing. If you like these guys check out Dead Prez, Jurrasic 5, and Everlast.
