Editorial Reviews

Sugar Hill Records will release A Tear in the Eye Is a Wound in the Heart... the second album by Black Prairie, the exploratory, back-porch ensemble founded by the Decemberists Chris Funk, Nate Query and Jenny Conlee.
Produced by Tucker Martine, Tear in the Eye... is the follow up to Feast of the Hunter s Moon , and the first Black Prairie album to primarily feature vocalist Annalisa Tornfelt. Written collaboratively by all band members, the album feels cinematic and familiar; Tornfelt s gentle, classic country-inspired singing is connected to the band s Baltic-Appalachian instrumentals by strange, orchestral interludes. The record is an evolution of the band s love of instrumental, Italian film score weirdness and the venerable, forgotten roots of American and Eastern European folk.

4.0 out of 5 stars Annalisa makes Americana Amazing September 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD
On any given Friday night here in Portland, every other club and coffee shop has an Americana band playing, most of it good.

Black Prairie stands out of the crowd for several reasons but my favorite is Annalisa Tornfelt's vocals. She hits this ethereal, melancholic, angelic tone that I can't get enough of.

This album showcases her voice more than the first one.

But Black Prairie is more than her voice -- the band does lots of great instrumentals. The Decemberists, one of Portland's great bands, makes up the heart of Black Prairie, giving them a strong performing confidence. It's kind of like, "Screw this! We'll play what we want. We've got a hit band if the public doesn't like this one." So they play what they want, and we are all the better for it.

Bottom line: if you like the Americana genre, you will probably like this album. If you like Tornfelt's voice, you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music November 24, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are a fan of The Decemberists, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by this sibe project by some of the lesser know members of the band. What I enjoyed most was the emphasis on the calming music, especially the string instruments used. This is a great addition to any playlist you may have for listening to wind down after a stressful day.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT!! November 20, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Great harmonies, great musicians, great music all together.
I originally found Black Prairie on Youtube for "How do you ruin me". I could not get the song out of my head so I bought the entire album hoping I wouldn't be disappointed. I was relieved. The whole thing is really good. I highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars This album is too artsy. November 20, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Black prairie is full of talent.....love their first album with a capital L. But this album's also great music was overshadowed by 2 particular tracks. One which has about 5 minutes of presumably intentional silence at the end (lame) and another that has closer to 15 minutes of silence which grows to an odd and loud snoring, or mooing, or whale grumble noise (really lame). I get that their artsists and their music is unparalleled but forget the gimicks and stick with what you're amazing at. I could have better spent my 10 bucks downloading he album as seperate songs effectively avoiding the 2 pieces of offending junk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black Prairie October 4, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful album so far. Lead singer reminds me of the lead singer for HEM, which isn't a bad thing in my opinion. Definitely one of the best purchases I've made in awhile. It's not really bluegrass or folk, but a mix of both, with some zydeco here and there. It's a blend of genres I love, but can only listen to for awhile. Their own take makes it interesting throughout the entire album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soothing, Folksy Sound September 18, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This music is definitely for fans of the Avett Brothers, Mumford and Sons, and the like. The lead female singer's voice is soulful and soothing. The music is splendid and varied, I definitely wasn't bored listening from track to track.

I can't stop repeating 'Nowhere, Massachusetts.'

The album was well worth the buy! I would recommend without hesitation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique find May 21, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Occasionally an album comes out and at first you don't appreciate the quality, this is one of those cases. The more you listen, the more you understand their message. Light, backwoods, lyrical, harmonies and old time instrumentals enchant the listener to looking for more.
