A song by song review - a new direction for the band, March 25, 2002
This review is from: Tears (Audio CD)
I bought this cd just because I love the band and did not recognize the name of the title song Tears and was a little upset that Amazon did not list the songs,When it arrived i was amazed at the disc but a few of the remixes droned on a bit. The band also has taken a slightly new direction here. The songs (including remixes) has a strong electronic feel to it and the band seems to be evolving somewhat in the area.
1.) Tears : This song is on my list of best Cruxshadows songs! The beat and tone of the song kind of reminds me of Marilyn my bitterness V2. Wonderful song & makes the single worth buying! The lyrics remind me of Sept 11. for some reason,I think its just the emotion of the lyrics
2.) Tears : (Apoptygma Berzerk remix) - Very similar to A.P.'s own sound with the vocals from Cruxshadows. This mix seems kind of droning at times sadly. (which is why the single got 4 out of 5 stars)
3. Within : this song is another that really shows a new direction from the band. The chorus chants "I raise my gin to the God within" The drumbeat gets a lil droning with the repeated drum kick but the music and vocals overlap it nicely to make it not mind numbing. Some of the best lyrics the band has ever done.
4. Tears (Robbie Tronco / Knobhead remix) The violin kicks in, the drumbeats then go and then it all stops and the vocals start. Then it repeats for each verse - probably one of the best done remixes i have ever heard! Plus it sounds like the vocals were re-done for this mix. The violin is so prominant here it is incredible! I love this mix!
5. Jabberwocky : Thunder rolls and the poem of Jabberwocky is read out. Not quite a song but just sort of a filler between songs. My wife loved this one though.
6. Tears : (Fictional remix) - This reminded me alot of VNV nation - They added ALOT of vocal effects on the mix and also it sounds like they also had the vocals re-done for this mix. Even though the music is great and the vocals are top notch here the 2 together just dont seem like they link up right but I will be playing this mix is I ever DJ again because it is VERY dancable.
7. Heavens Gaze (Acoustic tears mix) - Buy this cd for this song alone if you must! The same music of heavens gaze , slowed down then done on acoustic instruments. This song is beautiful!
This is only my opinions of the songs & I dont expect everyone to agree with me here. I gave it 4 out of 5 because of the remixes just not bieng fully up to par. Also the cover artwork (which is sadly not pictured) is some of the most wonderful i have seen in ages. Over all opinion,I think this is a great direction for the band and i am definatly awaiting a new cd from Cruxshadows soon!

Cruxshadows never disappoint, April 19, 2002
This review is from: Tears (Audio CD)
Wow. I loved the song Tears the first time I heard it in concert in Philly (home of knobhead) I heard the Knobhead remix premier at the show and waited with baited breath for the single. I loved Within, and Heaven's Gaze is one of my favorite songs, and the acoustic version is great. But my favorite is Jabberwocky. Annabelle Lee is wonderful and they continue the spoken word tradition with yet another masterpiece. I even convinced my parents, that though it's not their style, the band definately has talent!!!

Can't go wrong with the Cruxshadows, April 4, 2002
This review is from: Tears (Audio CD)
I love this new single!!
1) New songs are always a plus! Tears, Within, and Jabberwocky are all beautiful memorable songs (well, Jabberwocky is spoken, but just as entrancing.) I noticed that indeed CXS seem to have gone more industrial and faster but it's just as great as their older stuff.
2) I love the remixes because each one emphasizes a different track in the song; the ever delicious vocals of Rogue, the flawless violin playing of Rachel (brings back the middle eastern flavor found on Mystery), and so on.
3) Thought you could have enough versions of Heaven's Gaze? Think again! This is an acoustic version and terribly gorgeous.
