Intimate Jazz-Inflected Guitar and THAT Voice,
By Erica Bell (Washington State) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tears of Joy (Audio CD)
Growing up in Palo Alto in the 70's and early 80's, I saw Tuck and Patti frequently perform their set on the mezzanine of the Varsity Theatre, a wonderful venue now sadly closed. Being a kid in the age of the Power Guitar, I wasn't very musically sophisticated, but they were absolutely arresting. If you could muscle your way into the room, and find a place to sit down in the usually standing-room-only crowd, you'd be drawn into the twin arms of Tuck Andress' playful guitar and Patti's low, rich voice. It was an awful lot like being kissed.I didn't actually own a Tuck and Patti record until college. After all, they were right down the street! This was the first one I bought. Listening to it all these years later, it's like coming home. Standouts for me were the title track "Tears of Joy", because it showcases Tuck's virtuosity--he's rhythm, brass and guitar all at once--and their lovely cover of the Rogers and Hart favorite "My Romance", which is like having Patti sing you to dreamland. This is a great introduction to this duo, and I urge you also to move heaven and earth to see them live, if you can.

One of the best albums I own,
By Galatea "Galatea" (Southwest, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tears of Joy (Audio CD)
I've loved Tuck and Patti for years but it wasn't until I went to hear them live at a jazz club last year that I was moved to purchase this album. Take my Breath Away literally gave me chills and brought big old tears to my eyes. The music on this speaks to everyone. And that VOICE. It's a must have.

MUSIC with the M,
By ROBERTO BALLATI (Moscow) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tears of Joy (Audio CD)
Great music, with the capital M. Some tracks are just wonderful: listen to "Better than anything" and you'll surely put their cover on top of the thousands interpretations of this standard. These two make magic here: simple, essential, tasteful, creative, gorgeous, what a dream. many performers should listen carefully to this and bring some good inspiration home. Love u T and love u P.
