Editorial Reviews

Hard-honking horns; slinky rhythms; heart-throbbing beats. . . . This soundtrack to the new burlesque is the sound of vintage rhythm & blues, bump-and-grind exotica, and hipster jazz working its magic to uncover hidden desires and soft, sultry curves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great vintage saxophone jazz and r&b, June 25, 2006
This review is from: Tease: Beat of Burlesque (Audio CD)
Don't let the title put you off. Aside from the overplayed novelty number "The Stripper" and the Barney Kessel tune, virtually everything here is prime saxophone-based instrumentals. The lion's share of tracks go to Sam 'the Man' Taylor, and when you hear him you'll understand why. There's also a fantastic version of 'Harlem Nocturne' and a killer Charlie Parker cut. This is mostly small combo jazz and jump blues. While it's true that almost every track here would have been a fine soundtrack for a vintage stripper like Blaze Starr, it's equally true that they would be the perfect backdrop for a late-period film noir flick. Honestly, put on 'Harlem Nocturne' and it's so easy to envision neon lights, rainy streets, black-and-white imagery, and private eyes in trenchcoats and fedoras rushing past the shadows.

This is probably my most-played CD of the past couple weeks. I think you're going to enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun, June 7, 2006
This review is from: Tease: Beat of Burlesque (Audio CD)
This is an entertaining collection of tunes for beginning burlesquers to use. The absence of lyrics in most of the music will emphasize the dance aspect of your performance, and the beats will keep you on time without even trying. But even if you don't perform, this is a wonderful release of nearly lost music!

5.0 out of 5 stars SO FUN! Perfect for dancers, jazz enthusiasts, April 30, 2007
This review is from: Tease: Beat of Burlesque (Audio CD)
I LOVE this cd! The music is absolutely perfect for burlesque or dancing or stripping. The sound quality is a little foggy, but personally I think it adds to the character of each song. A good mix of songs, some slow and slinky while others upbeat and energetic. Highly reccomend for profesional dancers, jazz enthusiasts, or just for some fun dirty dancing on your own!
