4.0 out of 5 stars Great vintage saxophone jazz and r&b
Don't let the title put you off. Aside from the overplayed novelty number "The Stripper" and the Barney Kessel tune, virtually everything here is prime saxophone-based instrumentals. The lion's share of tracks go to Sam 'the Man' Taylor, and when you hear him you'll understand why. There's also a fantastic version of 'Harlem Nocturne' and a killer Charlie Parker cut. This...

... more of a groovy jazz thing. The Rhino TAKE IT OFF disc is a much better selection for the budding ecdysiast.

This is mostly small combo jazz and jump blues. While it's true that almost every track here would have been a fine soundtrack for a vintage stripper like Blaze Starr, it's equally true that they would be the perfect backdrop for a late-period film noir flick. Honestly, put on 'Harlem Nocturne' and it's so easy to envision neon lights, rainy streets, black-and-white imagery, and private eyes in trenchcoats and fedoras rushing past the shadows.

This is probably my most-played CD of the past couple weeks. I think you're going to enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun, June 7, 2006
This review is from: Tease: Beat of Burlesque (Audio CD)
This is an entertaining collection of tunes for beginning burlesquers to use. The absence of lyrics in most of the music will emphasize the dance aspect of your performance, and the beats will keep you on time without even trying. But even if you don't perform, this is a wonderful release of nearly lost music!

5.0 out of 5 stars SO FUN! Perfect for dancers, jazz enthusiasts, April 30, 2007
This review is from: Tease: Beat of Burlesque (Audio CD)
I LOVE this cd! The music is absolutely perfect for burlesque or dancing or stripping. The sound quality is a little foggy, but personally I think it adds to the character of each song. A good mix of songs, some slow and slinky while others upbeat and energetic. Highly reccomend for profesional dancers, jazz enthusiasts, or just for some fun dirty dancing on your own!

I wouldn't neccessary say that all of the cuts on this CD are "Stripper Music" but there's enough of them here. And any CD that has honking horns played by Sam "The Man" Taylor, Red Prysock, and Syl Austin, is okay with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoldering!, November 8, 2011

What a fun CD... it's very difficult NOT to feel sexy when you hear this mix of seductive tunes. Like some other reviewers, I agree that the sound quality is at times a little sketchy, but I feel it adds even more character to already soulful recordings. You can get your bump-and-grind on, or I find it's even a good CD to pop in the car player before a date--really gets you in the sultry feminine mindset. Go for it, ladies!

4.0 out of 5 stars just what i needed, August 24, 2008
This review is from: Tease: Beat of Burlesque (Audio CD)
I needed music for the garter toss at our reception and didn't want all the cheesey 80's hair band standards. This fit the bill perfectly...nothing vulgar, just sultry, raunchy sounding jazz that reminds you of an old smoky burlesque club. I love it.

3.0 out of 5 stars outdated, November 7, 2010

The newest song on this was recorded in 1956. Had I known this I would have never purchased it. I would still be interested in a CD with up to date stripper music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take it Off Slow...Real Slow, July 6, 2005
This review is from: Tease: Beat of Burlesque (Audio CD)
Yeah, OK. The sound generally is not that good. But for those of us lucky enough to catch some shows at some old 42nd st end of the line Burlesque shows, this CD is a trip down memory (Broadway) lane! The quality was never there, per the muusic, in the first place. It was derivative as all get out. This stuff is too!

It's still fun. I can recall all those strippers traipsing across the stage, showing literally nothing (a la Gypsy Rose Lee and her trademark bubble, or feather!), and I say to myself, "How far, or in some way (OK, little Baptist Buddhism here) how Fowl have we come?)

Are we that Chicken? Are there scruples in advertising? Are we all truly, filthy minions, mismanaging the planet? Is Global Warming something dreamed up by Drusch Limberbaugh as a diversion, while he arms Iran? I think we have to band together, armed banditos of Amastandia!

OK. Rant's over. Back to the meds...
