Book Description

March 1, 2006
In this light hearted romp of a romance set in 1890 Texas, a sassy whisky slinger and a down on his luck cowboy find true love together, against all odds. Lark Van Schuyler can take care of herself - and has ever since she ran away from home and wound up in Buck Shot, Oklahoma. Taking care of others is a novelty she can't afford. Until she sees a man deep in his drink and being cheated at poker. Lark decides to do him a favour...The last thing Larado needs is more booze, especially in his lap. Just when he's about to clean up at cards, a no-account soiled dove drops a drink on him. It's her own dang fault that she loses her job. He never expects to see her again. Especially not during a bank hold-up - in Texas. And married to him. Being tied down to a pretty gal and her crazy donkey is turning out to be the worst fix Larado's ever found himself in. The West isn't big enough for both of them. But maybe love is...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Gentry offers another pleaser with this light frontier romance that combines a sassy heroine, a penniless cowboy, false identities and the author's typically lively pace. Lark Van Schuyler, who fled her home for a life of independence, is managing just fine as a barmaid in dusty Buck Shot, Okla., until she befriends Larado, a drunken Texas cowboy who gets her fired, then unwittingly involves her in a violent bank robbery sparked by local crook Snake. With a posse after them, the two duped innocents flee separately, only to meet again coincidentally months later in a tiny west Texas town. Thinking to protect herself from the law, Lark answers an ad from a Sheriff Lawrence Witherspoon seeking a wife and discovers the sheriff is Larado. Since he doesn't seem to recognize her, Lark also adopts a false identity, posing as her own demure twin sister, Lark, and endures a very proper courtship by an apparently shy Larado. Although Lark attempts to learn domestic skills, it's her tomboyish cowhand know-how that proves critical when Larado and the town are in danger. Engaging minor characters, witty repartee and the lively tension of the masquerade create an engaging hold over the reader until all true selves are happily revealed at the end. (Mar.)

From Booklist

Lark Durango is nothing like her twin sister, Lacey, from To Tempt a Texan (2005). Whereas Lacey is a civic-minded suffragist, Lark is a -finishing-school dropout who ends up working as a saloon girl in Buck Shot, Oklahoma. Larado Witherspoon, an unapologetic rogue and rascal, is a drifter who gets suckered into taking part in a bank robbery. He asks Lark to hold his horse's reins, thus making her an unwitting accomplice. Lark figures her best shot at hiding out is to become the mail-order bride of the sheriff of Rusty Spur, Texas. But the sheriff is none other than Larado's twin, or so he says. There's lots of amusement in the twenty-seventh book in Gentry's popular Panorama of the Old West series. With its carefully researched historical background, lively humor, and endearing but gullible townspeople, Gentry's novel is both an excellent addition to her series and a perfectly fine stand-alone piece. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I had hoped....., April 9, 2006
This review is from: To Tease A Texan (Paperback)
I really wasn't all that impressed with this book. The heroine, upon learning that her groom isn't who she thought he was, turns self-righteous and indignant and kicks him out of the bedroom. Never mind that she did the same thing to him and passed herself off as someone else. Then after weeks of being denied what every husband wants, she gets jealous when she thinks that he's getting it elsewhere. Then towards the end just out of the clear blue she decides that sex is now ok. Give me a break!! The only real and honest character in this book was the adorable and mischevious donkey. Personally I like my heroines with a little bit more substance and backbone. And I HATE women who make their men beg for it. This was not the worst book that I have ever read, but it certainly wasn't the best either.

1.0 out of 5 stars Tired of Texas, December 21, 2006
This review is from: To Tease A Texan (Paperback)
How many times can one author refer to the state of TX in one book? At many places throughout, you cannot go even a whole page without seeing the word. It's used so much, it just got to be silly. And the story isn't all that great. Like the other reviewer said, you don't really care what happens to the characters. It's not often that I start a book and not finish it, and this was one of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars lighthearted western romance, March 4, 2006
This review is from: To Tease A Texan (Paperback)
In 1890 in Buck Shot, Oklahoma Territory Lark Van Schuyler is used to caring for herself ever since she ran away from home in search of her twin Lacey. However, the niece of a wealthy rancher, she normally avoids getting involved with other people's foolishness, but feels sorry for the drunken cowhand being cheated at cards by Snake in the Last Chance Saloon. She intercedes, but loses her job.

Snake persuades Laredo Hudson to case out the bank. The next he knows he is involved in a hold-up, but he and Snake separate and he escapes thanks to Lark. He reaches the rendezvous point, but only Snake's girl is there. He leaves the part of the loot he took from the bank with the girl and leaves for Texas with Lark, unaware that Snake is coming after him for he thinks Laredo has his half the loot with him.

TO TEASE A TEXAN is a lighthearted western romance starring a delightful courageous heroine and a seemingly pathetic cowboy who makes Pauline seem perilous. The action-packed story line is fun to follow as Laredo seems to land in one problem situation after another with Lark's rescue efforts making matters worse. Sub-genre fans will enjoy this intriguing glimpse at the lawless late nineteenth century "Whiskey Towns" while Lark and Laredo fall in love over a series of capers.
