5.0 out of 5 stars Oliva Fans Celebrate!!!, November 12, 2004
This review is from: Teatro Olivia (Hardcover)
Ian Falconer has returned to his rich roots of set designing, and created an environment for Olivia fans to truly relish! I just bought this set today, and it is wonderful. The main stage is sturdy and cleverly put together. There are spaces above and to the sides for character placement and manipulation. The included drop down sets are beautifully evocative charcoal drawings, and there are even two extra blank sets to inspire budding scenic artists. A large built in drawer allows for storage of all the included scenic backdrops and figures, with plenty of room left for creations of ones own. The included figures are sturdy and beautiful renditions of classic Olivia poses, with several original to this set and well in keeping with the Porcine Diva we have all come to know and Love!

This lovely set perfectly captures Olivia's feisty zeal for life and of course the theatric, which made the original book so inspiring to all who have ever known, (or been) little girls.

I love the fact that Falconer returned to his roots with this one, and brought out his little diva in a setting which will inspire countless ideas and hours of fun for Olivia fans young and old.

In an era where so many toys are expected to stimulate without themselves stimulating creativity, this play set is in a class by itself. Teatro Olivia is truly an item which will provide a myriad of expressive possibilities! Thank You Mr. Falconer!!!

With elaborate fold-out sets, six Olivia paper dolls and a Playbill that offers up plot summaries, your child can create a world of his or her own for Olivia. In addition, there is extra stock so that kids can design their own backdrops, letting their imagination soar. This is a wonderful package, perfectly timed for the holiday season, and sure to be a winner under the Christmas tree.

I bought "Teatro Olivia" at the beginning of summer, and my kids have spent hours playing with it. The material is sturdy and has taken a lot of play from my children and their friends. Extra blank backdrops are included in the package, so my children have been busy making up new plays to present--Sponge Bob, Harry Potter, Anne of Green Gables and so on. Thanks for a great educational toy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hours of Fun, February 19, 2008
By
This review is from: Teatro Olivia (Hardcover)
My 11 year old daughter LOVES the "Olivia" books and we thought this would be a great gift as well. She enjoyed the process of setting up Olivia, the cast and doing some shows for us. She's played with it a few times since, but we have to encourage her to take it out of the bookshelf.

Might be a bit better for a younger Olivia fan, but a great push to imaginative play!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Imaginary Play Toy, August 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Teatro Olivia (Hardcover)
This is a lovely little imaginary play tool for a careful child. We bought this for our daughter when she was 6, and at the age of 9 she continues to find joy playing with it in new ways.

This is an imaginary play toy; a tri-fold, fold out paper theater on a hard, chip-board backing. It has a nice semi-glossy finish, which makes carefully wiping the occasional sticky fingerprints off quite easy. There are a series of thick paper backdrops to hang from the theater (which could easily be softly laminated for durability if desired) including: Three backdrops from a Shakespearean play that include garden, courtyard and balcony scenes, three backdrops from Russian ballets that include two twisted forest archways, as well as a darkened castle on a lake (Swan Lake), an opera backdrop with a closed curtain that resembles the Metropolitan, and three Asian-themed backdrops that include a rounded red archway, a red pagoda, and red columns encircled by green dragons- perfect for "performing" Madame Butterfly or Turandot. There are little paper doll "actors" for Shakespearean tragedies (or comedies), opera singers for Turandot (or any other opera your little one can dream up), and a bevy of ballerinas for the Russian ballets your child "performs" featuring them. There is also a playbill that presents Turandot, Swan Lake, and Romeo and Juliet: this offers a synopsis of the performance, action for each of the acts, and information on the "players": Olivia the Pig and her brother Ian.

This toy is very cute- great for fans of the Olivia books and for those with a penchant for drama and marching to the beat of their own drums. Each time our daughter plays with it, she gets more involved with the storytelling and the play action- even going to the lengths to "print up" play tickets for us to attend a special performance. She thoroughly entertains us (and herself) for hours and has managed, with care, not to lose or damage any of the smaller parts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for all Olivia fans!, June 20, 2008
By
This review is from: Teatro Olivia (Hardcover)
I bought this for my niece when it first came out -- not even really realizing what it was, as I had been buying her all of the Olivia books after I found the first one at a school book fair (I'm a teacher). Teatro Olivia, in all of its 3-D glory is just so very neat, for who doesn't love a chance to play with a beloved character from a story? (I had already bought my niece the stuffed Olivia...as well as having bought one for myself! And no, I do not spoil her -- she gets $50 spent on her at both Christmas and her birthday). So I had to purchase this. I don't know if she liked it as much as I wanted her to (she lives 1000 miles away), but I'm thinking of buying one for myself and putting it in my classroom...for me, as I teach high school students!
