Smash 2 Seasons 2012

Season 1
4.7 out of 5 stars (1,368) IMDb 7.7/10

"Smash" is a musical drama that celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of the Broadway theater as it follows a cross-section of dreamers and schemers who all have one common desire - to be a "smash." The series centers on the process of creating a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe - written by the successful songwriting duo of Tom (Christian Borle) and Julia (Debra Messing). Julia recently began the process of adopting a child with her husband Frank (Brian d'Arcy James) of many years, but her focus is torn when she has the opportunity to write another Broadway hit. A rivalry soon forms for the lead role between a youthful, inexperienced Midwestern beauty Karen (Katharine McPhee) - who is trying to find fame in the big city against all odds - and stage veteran Ivy Bell (Megan Hilty), who's determined to leave the chorus line and finally get her big break. A tenacious producer, Eileen (Anjelica Huston), discovers the "Marilyn" project and jumps on board with a brilliant director, Derek (Jack Davenport) - whose talent is matched by his cunning and egocentric amorality. Jaime Cepero stars as Ellis, and Raza Jaffrey stars as Dev.

If you love the world of musical theater, you may enjoy this smashing romp aptly titled SMASH. With a stellar cast including Deborah Messing, Katherine McPhee and Anjelica Huston with Spielberg producing it, there's talent invested in it.

The talent is trying to produce a Broadway Musical based on the iconic Marilyn Monroe. However, there are the usual challenges: inconvenient romances, slimy director, cast rivalry, insufficient financial backing, script rewriting etc. It is great fun to observe the creative process and the chaos surrounding it. Will they produce a smash hit? You want to keep watching to see if it will come together.

If you're here, you probably know that Smash is one of the best shows to appear on television in the last 20 years. Thank you, Theresa Rebeck, for creating it!

Great music, great characters (Derek is my favorite), everybody who loves New York and especially Broadway will have a BLAST watching every single episode. What could you expect, it also has Steven Spielberg as one of its executive producers!

I'm sure that thousands and thousands of americans and foreigners who love NYC will feel the same way. Am I right?

My god... and the original music of this show !?

I don't have words to describe how incredible and perfect they are, really, REALLY creative, songs AND lyrics, you have to watch Smash and listen to them yourself, if you still didn't do that!
(Don't waste any time, btw, you're gonna fall in love with the original music!)

The original songs were written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, these guys deserve no less than a standing ovation! (They are also executive producers). Where do I sign up to work with them?

My favorite ones are: "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" (episode 3), "On Lexington & 52nd Street" (episode 7), "A Thousand and One Nights" (an AWESOME indian song on episode 12) and "Second Hand White Baby Grand" (also episode 12). Some of them you can have here The Music Of Smash [+digital booklet]

I, myself, a brazilian born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, have Times Square/Broadway as my favorite place in the city, so you can imagine what it was for me the release of this show.

But seriously, on this day and age, no announcement of a Blu-ray release with perfect image/sound and tons of extras? Come on!

Best show I have seen in years. I did not expect to like it and by about 15 minutes into the first episode I was hooked. The songs are incredible, the storyline very engaging and a tremendous cast.

I have watched this amazing series 2 or 3 times through and I am amazed at the amount of superb work and artistry that is put into a once a week tv show. It has to be a daunting task and I have been a fan of many of the stars for many years. I am truly amazed at Katharine's growth from the first days of American Idol until now (and yes I voted for her week after week). Megan, Debra, Angelica and everyone in the cast are superb. This video gets my highest rating as does the show! Long live Smash!!!

I'll admit it - I missed this show when it aired on TV and only watched it after its cancellation. What this show did was pretty incredible - it made a non-existent play must-see TV, resulting in a live concert spin-off, to the delight of long-time fans. It introduced many of us to the phenomenal Megan Hilty who was part of an incredible supporting cast, including Raza Jaffrey and Jack Davenport, two of my favorite British men. The reason I'm only giving four stars is due to the way the writers constantly attempted to thrust Katherine McPhee's ingenue character down our throats. Although this was supposedly her vehicle, she was simply outclassed at every turn. We don't have cable or regularly watch TV, so I'd never been exposed to her except for a youtube video of her version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" which impressed me favorably. However, when placed beside Megan Hilty vying for Marilyn, it makes you wonder just what the directors where thinking if they wanted an audience to root for Karen when Ivy clearly deserved the role. Ivy became Marilyn whereas Karen just sang prettily. It's unfortunately just given me a vague antipathy towards McPhee and a desire to never watch her perform again. Enough of the soap-box. This show is definitely worth your while if you enjoy musicals or soap-opera-esque behind-the-scenes drama (which I do sometimes.) I found this highly entertaining and enjoyable for the most part. I won't even review the second season which was just a mess. Although the actors valiantly tried to save it, the writers went completely off track, which is heart-breaking for fans of the show since there was so much to love in the first season. The high point (for me) was when Bernadette Peters sang "Hang the Moon". I cried. I don't often cry, but her rendition and the context in which it was sung was just heartbreakingly beautiful. So, don't miss Smash or you will be depriving yourself of a treat, indeed.
