Product Description

The COOL-U" Phase Change garment is designed to be worn beneath clothing without the physiological problems that would result from ice packs being placed in close proximity to the skin. COOLING ENERGY is created from a unique PHASE CHANGE MATERIAL (PCM) mechanically sealed in durable inserts. After freezing in ice water or a refrigerator (it freezes at 58 degrees so a refrigerator will freeze the chemical pack) for approximately twenty-five (25) minutes, COOL-U" PCM Cooling Vests deliver a constant temperature of 58F/14C for 2-3 hours. Our vests are ideal for wearing under HazMat and other Protective Suits (like a mascot costume) or as an alternative to the standard evaporative cooling vests which must be worn outside of clothing to be effective. The vest includes 1 set of 4 cooling inserts. Each vest has side and shoulder Velcro" adjustments to accommodate for various shapes and sizes. M-L is for anyone 100-175 lbs, L-XL for anyone 175-250 lbs.

The previous reviewer is right but there is a simple way around it. Initially, the velcro straps seemed too long and did not provide enough room to grip properly but as I gave it more thought I realized that there is a solution. Simply fold the velcro so it grips onto itself, which shortens its overall length leaving just enough on the end to grip properly and the vest becomes highly adjustable making it fit nice and snug. There is a little flap left over but it easily folds down. Otherwise the vest would be pretty much useless because as the previous reviewer said you would not be able to get good body contact and therefore no cooling. It is definately information that might have been better coming with the vest.

The vest will certainly cool your core and make work more bearable but you must be realistic. Hot is hot! If you are doing hard sweaty work you will still feel the heat and get sweaty but you will also be as comfortable as you can be under the circumstances. The product itself is well built and works as described.

I purchased this item to wear under a mascot costume and I've found it works very well, and pretty much counteracts the extra heat caused by wearing a full body covering in thick synthetic fur. It still gets stuffy with my head covered but this vest makes an impressive difference.

As other users have mentioned, the velcro adjustments on the sides leave a little to be desired, I'm 5'9", 150lbs and I needed to double up the velcro leaving some tabs sticking out to get the snug fit the vest requires but it works. I plan on modifying the straps to better fit me.

I bought this as a gift for a friend of mine who has a home inspection business. Summers where I live are extremely hot and humid, and he reported that he believes the use of this vest prevented several cases of heat stroke when up in attics and in crawl spaces. He loves the utility pockets as well. The gel packs MUST be placed flat when freezing or the vest will become uncomfortable for wear and won't fit just right. We solved the problem by filling up an inexpensive water cooler with ice and layering the gel packs in there to freeze, rather than take up the room and risk indentation in the freezer with the food. All in all, definitely worth the price.

First, TechKewl had the order shipped and in my hands well before the three week waiting period that Amazon predicted in their order confirmation to me.

As to performance - seems to work quite well. I intend to use it in a hot (mid to upper 90s) climate in high humidity. I put the gel packs in a freezer for a couple of hours, then loaded up the vest and went for a one hour walk. I worked up a light sweat only, and was noticeably more comfortable than if I'd not had the vest. At the end of one hour, the packs were beginning to feel less firm (note - freeze them flat with no sharp bends or you'll be feeling the bumps and lumps through the vest). At the end of 3 hours, the packs needed re-refrigeration. I haven't tried immersing them in ice water to see how long they cool after that.

The vest with all gel packs installed is rather bulky. It does make you look like you're wearing a life jacket or that you've put on some serious weight. Actual weight is probably somewhere around 5 pounds, but the vest distributes it where it's not too noticeable when you're wearing it.

The zipper failed after two weeks of use. The velcro straps don't offer enough adjustment.

The vest needs to be in contact with the body in order to transfer coolness to the wearer, and the vest cannot be tightened enough for smaller or even average-sized humanoids.
