True balanced armature headphone. I was expecting a vocal focused earphone according to the previous purchase from Audio Technica's headphones. But CK100PRO is offering a true balanced sound signature. Bass is quick and punchy, mids and highs are very neutral. The sound is un-tuned or lite-tuned to me. I did some listening comparisons with my Westone 4. W4 has a wider sound stage and stronger bass than 100PRO. However, I got more details and clearer vocal voice from 100PRO.
This pair of headphone may work properly only with high-end "portable player" like Hifiman products(weight like 5 pounds). Not for my IPod classic though. With a 39ohm impedance, When i plug 100PRO in my IPod classic, the right unit has a noticeable lower volume than the left one. After I switch it on my Schitt Audio compact amplifier, The volume issue got fixed and I had a way better sound. I tried it on my friend's Sony A864 player, I still doesn't perform a satisfied sound. The result is that CK100pro needs a serious amplifier to amp it up. Otherwise it just gonna give you a compromised sound.
****Update: I've been using CK100pro for about 3 months. What surprised me the most is that it has a burn-in process. Now the sound signature is changed little bit. The vocal is getting closer. I use JDS labs C5 portable amplifier to amp it up on-the-go. They just get along very well with each other.
