Audio-Technica ATHIM02 SonicPro In-Ear Monitor Headphones

When Audio-Technica engineers developed the new SonicPro in-ear monitor (IM) headphones, they centered the design around the three most important components of a superb listening experience: 1) Sound, 2) Fit and 3) Functionality.

With its dual balanced armature drivers and a horn-shaped conductor pipe to reduce acoustic radiation resistance, the ATH-IM02 in ear monitor headphones effortlessly deliver that pure listening experience. And the innovation doesn’t stop there – the headphones were specially designed to fit and seal within the ear for the ultimate in-ear monitoring. Each pair comes equipped with three sizes of silicone earpieces (S/M/L) and Comply foam earpieces (M) for a customized fit. Detachable cables with formable wire and a carrying case add additional convenience and functionality to the headphones, allowing you to easily take them wherever life takes you.

When it comes to in-ear headphones priced above $100, often the question is not if they are good or bad, but rather how good are they and if they represent a good value in terms of their price to sound ratio. The price is often dictated by a number of drivers used in a design, typically in $100-$200 range for a single BA driver and then approximately $100 more for every additional driver. The sound quality is not as predictable and left to manufacturer interpretation of how they think it should be reproduced and delivered to your ears. In my opinion, sound quality is the most important factor, though we would like price to be reasonable too. That is why after careful examination of Audio Technica's new line of IEMs ATH-IM01/02/03/04, I decided to go with their dual driver IM02 model. It was a step back from my previous quad driver models from UE and Westone, but I found it to be an excellent decision, and after a few days of testing I can confirm they deliver an excellent value if you are serious about stepping into a world of audiophile sounds. Here is what I found.

I always start with a packaging of the product, and here Audio Technica didn't disappoint. Beside high quality images, full list of included accessories, and spec in both Japanese and English, it also includes an internal component breakdown to show you in details every piece of the design. I find such presentation to be very educational. Speaking of accessories, IM02 includes 3 pairs of silicone eartips, one pair of Comply foam tips, and a quality storage case. Though I don't consider cables to be an accessory, the new IM line of AT headphones now feature detachable cables which can be replaced in case of failure. As we all know a cable failure is very common with headphones, so being able to replace these is a big bonus.

As always, I start with a packaging of the product, and here Audio Technica never disappoints. Beside high quality images, full list of included accessories, and spec in both Japanese and English, it also included an internal component breakdown to show you in details every piece of the design. I find such presentation to be very educational. When it comes to accessories, IM03 included 3 pairs of silicone eartips, one pair of Comply foam tips, and a quality storage case. Though I don't consider cables to be an accessory, the new IM line of AT headphones now feature detachable cables which can be replaced in case of failure. As we all know a cable failure is very common with headphones, so being able to replace these is a big bonus. Here, AT decided to use 2 pin connector which is key-shaped to be attached in only one way with a very secure snap. To assist with behind the ear fitment, the only way these could be worn, there is a memory wire portion right after the connector to form a secure and comfortable loop. The same goes for the headphone earpieces itself, I found the design to have an ergonomic shape with a very comfortable fitment inside of my ear. I do have to note that with addition driver, IM03 housing became larger in comparison to IM02.

Doesn't happen often, but I was actually very pleased with a storage case included with these headphones since it has a generous rectangular shape to fit headphones with cables without a need to bend pre-shaped memory wires. Nothing is more annoying than spending time re-shaping the wire every time you take it out of the storage case when it's too small. As a matter of fact, IM03 case was a little bit bigger in comparison to IM02.

I'm no stranger to headphones, bought many in last 8 years, reviewed many, and i travel weekly. Sold a few on Amazon, probably could sell a few more:-) My cans range from newest B&W, full size, Phiaton Bluetooth, Sure se ~500, whetstone 4R, Bose QC 20i, ultras one Palladium, Beyer T5p, Grado GR10, Whetstone 4R and last but not least Senn HD800
So I became interested in these IM04; because of High build quality, 4 speakers, great fit and comfort, and hopefully great sound, and good isolation for travel. All these attributes, particularly the fit, comfort, not falling out are drawbacks of all the IEM's I mentioned. So the IM04s win on those attributes, comfortable, secure, + isolation. Now the sound. So I just got these, and with me have the Grados, Bose and Ultrasone..a good range to compare. So without a lot of detail , my opinion is these sound great! the vocals are a bit forward, and slightly smoothed, very, very natural. I can listen to these most of the day, and not tire, and I love vocals.
I tested them with Algorhythm Solo -DB DAC and a Ray Samuels SR-71B amp, and straight up from the iPhone 5s. Initially I heard, you needed an AMP to drive these because of the 4th speaker, my opinion is you can but it's not necessary. Sound great from the iPhone 5S straight up. My main reason for writing the review; is because I had doubts. Other reviewers said the IM04 is darker, and more muted than the IM03 which has positive reviews, but I haven't tried. So when I first put these on with the medium silicone tips they ship with; I noticed a weak distant base, and not the sharpest mids and highs overall. They also ship with a set comply T500, medium tips. After hours of comparing and listening, I felt the IM04s didn't cut it.
