The one flaw (typical of A-T) they don't sound entirely natural, but that's the case with the vast majority of sound systems so...****EDIT**** These have burned in a little more (or I'm getting more used to them) and I'm finding the mids to be pretty dry, plus I've been comparing them head-to head with other sound systems; they are actually above average in the "natural tone" department.

These earbuds are like....there are a bunch of flat screens right in front of your eyes. Each screen contains an instrument. All of the detail of each instrument is completely controlled with practically zero resonance. The bass impact is perfect; tom-tom slightly over to the right? You feel the bass impact slightly over to the right, within the whole range of it, in exactly the perfect location. You hear that tom as a singular entity, controlled...incredibly controlled.

Do you know what an equalizer is? With these you need to turn it off! EQ or anything else makes these sound worse! They are perfect without any manipulation. ****EDIT**** I take that back (kinda), Though overall they sound best flat, they are fun to manipulate. The bottom end seemingly has no limit, these will CRANK OUT BASS! As cool as that is, it pales in comparison to the vocal detail these will achieve. I'm hearing layers of texture in voices that I cannot hear in Definitive Bipolars, or 70's JBLs, '80s Beyerdynamic DT990s, or ANYTHING ELSE I TRY!

300 bucks. Looking for good sound? Here ya go.

Very glad I have these, as not a lot of people do and it could turn out to be a real discovery.

I'll up the rating to 5 stars for sure if the harshness in the highs go away. Right now as BRILLIANT as they sound I do struggle to keep them on my head for longer than 15 minutes, as I listen to music, all genres, a fairly high volumes.

When ATH-CKM1000 arrived I had at my disposal Shure se310, Hifiman re262, Yamaha EPH-100. Not an untalented line up, yet, in terms of sheer sonic capacity and impact the ATH-CKM1000 simply annihilated them. It's not perfect (sibilant AS HELL, exaggerated on both ends, will bully your ears with its physical dimensions) but it has the raw dynamic range and rendition ability I never heard. I like boxing so in a way this is the Thomas Hearns of IEMs. In NBA terms it's Blake or Shawn Kemp, definitely not Ray Allen.

As an object of consumption, this thing has a air of luxury about it that's very unique. It feels like jewelry, until you listen to it. I am inclined to give it 6 stars IF the harsh highs goes away as it can be overbearing. I really like to keep going between this one and the Yamaha EPH-100 as they represent very different efforts to explore the dynamic driver concept. And they illustrate very satisfying yet different results. While other iems I have on hand are good, they are not equally good at everything, and the ATH-CKM1000 is on the verge of doing that. It could be a gem if the base tightens up a bit and THE HARSHNESS IN THE HIGHS GOES AWAY!!

TO FOLLOW UP......Based the majority of online reivews, these must be the most misunderstood headphone of all time!! Afert some more hours of listening, I don't think the sibilance will ever go away, or even weaken significantly.

Although I have seen several reports on the prevailing counterfeit problems of this specific model on the internet, with my trust to Amazon, I still made my order. However, I was soon disappointed by the quality of the ear piece when I got it. Its sound quality is of no similar level to that of my UE900 and K701. Beside on having several features duplicating with the counterfeit reported, the quality of the sound is only at the level of the one comes with my IPhone 4. No sound stage, no treble, distorted bass. To put it more straightly, I got a fake piece from Amazon.

I would say 50 hours minimum to get rid of that brightness and tone down the sibilance a bit, but the other reviewer is correct you got to give them a bit of time and then you are rewarded in a big way. Beautifully solid titanium housings and quality abound from the packaging down to the styled etching on the earpieces.

As for tips, I settled on the Comply T-200 foams with the earwax guard feature which is a little foam included inside the canal that tones down the highs and sibilance just enough and adds a touch of warmth.

I should really cut two stars. The cable is too short, and the extension cable makes it too long. There is no "just right". And cable management is an important feature. But dude ... they sound amazing ...

Revised: I had to cut the 2nd star today. Two more things on the cons list: 1. They fit real snug in my ears and get to hurting after about 20 minutes. I'll probably adapt to them eventually so this isn't the main reason to cut an extra star 2. Any kind of jostling/motion makes the big back bass producing section make low booming bass noise. I ran 4 miles and it was constant agony on my ears. Even walking produced enough bounce to do this.

If you plan to use only when still, and can adapt to wearing them in your ears, than they are 5 star. Really truly mind blowing sound! But I had intended to run with them plus earbuds HAVE to be usable in a portable 'I'm going somewhere' mode, right? These aren't.
