5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for the serious TA student!
I found the book (Technical Analysis Explained) to be extremely helpful in my study of this fascinating subject. I can understand why Technical Analysis Explained is one of two books on the recommended reading list for the Certified Market Technicians Course. Pring has the knack of making what could be a dull subject interesting. This is the kind of detailed background...

1.0 out of 5 stars Hugely overrated
This book is a dud. I don't understand how it has gained such a hyped-up reputation. I use technical analysis in managing a small hedge fund and have found dozens of books on technical analysis that are more useful than this one. This book will bore you into a coma with its fuzzy, unfocused babbling and surprising lack of insight. The bible of technical analysis...

This is the kind of detailed background needed to properly watch both the market and specific stocks. The charting techniques presented give the investor and trader far greater insight into future probable price trends and will significantly increase their rate of return.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I Bought It!, December 3, 1997

I was first attracted to this book at my local library, so I checked it out. I had intended on merely reading selected chapters and taking some notes. However, as I got into the book, I realized there was much more meat here. There MUST be a copy on my personal bookshelf. I quickly purchased the book here at Amazon.com (I love this place!). With my highlighter in hand and notepad, I started devouring this book.

Pring's work reminds me of a college textbook in its thorough approach to technical analysis of the stock market. I have just gotten interested in the stock market, and I need this kind of detailed background so I can properly watch both the market and specific stocks. The charting techniques he explains will give the investor far greater insight into the future probable price trends. This will significantly increase their rates of return.

If someone knows a better book on technical analysis of stocks please e-mail me about it. (However, do NOT send me any junk e-mail advertisements.) I highly recommend this book to any investor desiring to get into the details of using charts to predict stock and market price movements.

I use technical analysis in managing a small hedge fund and have found dozens of books on technical analysis that are more useful than this one. This book will bore you into a coma with its fuzzy, unfocused babbling and surprising lack of insight. The bible of technical analysis continues to be John Murphy's "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets."

1.0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere, July 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Technical Analysis Explained: The Successful Investor's Guide to Spotting Investment Trends and Turning Points (Hardcover)
Not sure where some of the reviewers' heads are, but for candlestick charting, this book has beginners patterns in it. For more in depth coverage, Steve Nison's books are best.

As far as the KST system goes, there are better.

This is a basic book at best in my opinion, and after the initial few chapters on charting basics, it continues into verbiage that to me isn't accepted consistently by seasoned traders or analysts.

My recommendation is John Murphy's book "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets".

4.0 out of 5 stars good TA contents but mainly for long term investors, October 5, 2001
This review is from: Technical Analysis Explained: The Successful Investor's Guide to Spotting Investment Trends and Turning Points (Hardcover)
The authors did a good job to explain TA clearly to the readers. In term of depth and clarity, it is as good as John Murphy's classic. The interest rate is Pring's strong area. He took an economist views to use TA. This was not a bad thing. But most of the charts he used were weekly charts. The signals to noise ratio was very high. Every inicator could give very clear and good signals. But when you use the daily charts, it simply couldn't happen. You can use weekly charts to make decisions ONLY if you are a lone term investor. This book is certainly not for day traders.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Christmas Present I got this year, January 1, 1999
This review is from: Technical Analysis Explained: The Successful Investor's Guide to Spotting Investment Trends and Turning Points (Hardcover)
The book is well written, easy to read. The author gives enough detail and diagrams to explain all the concepts. Along with John Murphy's "Technical Analysis of the Futures Market", these are the two best books I've read about technical analysis. My only concern is that the book is 8 1/2 years old, that some of the newer techniques and indicators aren't covered. John Murphy updated and upgraded his book, I hope this author also writes another edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but overdue for a revision, March 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Technical Analysis Explained: The Successful Investor's Guide to Spotting Investment Trends and Turning Points (Hardcover)
One of the best books on the subject but a lot has changed in the past 8 years. I'd like to hear what Pring has to say about trading on the Internet and, in particular, trading Internet stocks.

What I particularly liked about this book was its practical application of using the many facets of TA to come up with a view on the market overall and then identify attractive sectors within it. Pring is quite momentum/rate of change oriented but his "Know Sure Thing" indicator is worth trying if you haven't already. Tying in other macro indicators such as interest rates into your investment decision is also very informative and helpful.
