Book Description

A Technical History of xthe Motor Car will appeal to engineers in the automobile and components industries, car buffs and classic car enthusiasts, and the ordinary motorist with an interest in the way the car has developed; in fact to anyone who has a passion for cars. Working from original sources wherever possible and interviewing retired eminent engineers who were actively involved in the design and manufacture of motor cars about their work and times, the authors trace the development of the automobile industry and the evolution of each component and system into its present form. Lavishly illustrated with contemporary line drawings, the book is a detailed history of automobile engineering and design including * the intricacies of combustion chamber design * suspensions, from de Dion's rear axle to Citroen's hydropneumatic system * the successful innovation of weight saving unitary bodies replacing separate chassis and body * prototypes which never found their way into production such as sleeve valves and Lanchester's worm gears * political and economic influences, from horse power taxes to the reduction in engine emissions Readers will find not only a 'nuts and bolts' description but also reasons why particular developments were adopted.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Too many motoring books spread limited material thinly with a maximum of verbiage for concealment; this book does not have a wasted word in its 430 pages. It is a considerable work of scholarship by two engineers of great experience in the motor industry. It is written in a very readable style and contains no material which would make it inaccessible to the non-engineer and is extensively illustrated by black and white drawings. It is a considerable feat to have covered so much ground thoroughly in just 430 pages. This is a book which certainly belongs in the library of anyone who is seriously interested in cars, whether vintage or otherwise.
JBC
The authors of this book are to be congratulated for compressing so much information, in such a readable way, into one volume. Newcomb and Spurr will remain the standard technical history of the motor car for many years to come.
David Thomas for The Journal of Transport History
...very readable, erudite account...
