"This valuable new publication is appropriate and timely... almost every conceivable emergency rescue situation is covered, including water and unstable ground, loose animals, trailer incidents, and barn and wildfires. Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue is an invaluable reference. It provides a history of the field, a review of current understanding, and expert guidance that should be incorporated into the National Disaster Management System and adopted for use by state and local emergency response and animal care and control professionals." - JAALAS, March 2009
“Readers of Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue will gain tremendous understanding of how to handle many common and unusual large animal rescue scenarios. This text is a must-have for large animal veterinarians, whether they practice ambulatory medicine, work in public service, or are interested in animal rescue and disaster medicine. This book is also a useful training tool for veterinary technicians and veterinary students.” - Compendium Equine, January 2009

Comprehensive textbook,

This review is from: Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (Hardcover)
The large animal rescue field is small; and, though it has been around since the 1990s is in its infancy really, considering how few emergency responders (police, fire, ambulance, animal control) are trained. While many responders are exposed to SMALL animals such as dogs and cats in their work, what is the likelihood of exposure to horses, llamas, or livestock? For most, the closest they will ever get to a horse is watching a race; the closest they will get to livestock is eating it. But what happens when they are confronted with a panicked, injured animal in the field? Many are injured; some have died; many of the animals are injured further or die. Large animal rescue is dangerous in ways they just don't understand.
Drs. Rebecca and Tomas Gimenez have written an outstanding manual on the subject. Along with their compatriots on the west coast, Deb and John Fox, they have defined the "gold standard" in large animal rescue, and it shows in this book. When I was researching "Save Your Horse! A Horse Owner's Guide to Large Animal Rescue", the Gimenezes were very supportive and forthcoming with technical expertise and advice. I was amazed at their depth of knowledge and willingness to share. Their passion for this subject and determination to spread the training throughout the emergency responder world shines through everything do. LAR training is a "tough sell" right now. Most agencies have cut back funding for training; many are even cutting staff. While actually sending staff to participate in training may be beyond their financial capabilities, an excellent resource is available to them for little monetary outlay. ALL emergency responders should have access to this book through their work. If you are a responder, please encourage your department to purchase a copy. If you are a horse or livestock owner who may someday require the services of responders to extricate your animal from a life-threatening situation, buy a few books and donate them. When it comes to saving lives, we all need to step up and help. This book is an excellent way to do just that. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in large animals or who wants to keep our responders safe. For further information on LAR, [...] Michelle Staples Horse Safety Specialist [...]

Long awaited resource!,

This review is from: Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (Hardcover)
This resource is comprehensive it its treatment of just about all large animal response needs. I was even surprised to see a section covering decontamination in the text. While rare outside of rural areas, large animal rescue training is as an often ignored subject with most fire departments and animal control agencies which focus on dealing with small domestic animals. This resource is an excellent tool to refresh the very perishable skill of large animal rescue. The only thing that would add to the book would be a step by step illustration of the application of the various manipulation, lift, and rescue techniques; specifically how to apply the webbing to the animal.

Large Animal Resue -- Being Prepared in Case of an Emergency,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (Hardcover)
Being part of the D.A.R.T. team [Durham Animal Response Team] we are being trained to respond to various animal emergency situations. The Large Animal Emergency Rescue book by Gemenez's and May was recommended by one of our state training persons. There are various aids listed for various situations which may occur and are presented nicely.
