5.0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book for all trumpet/cornet players, October 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Technical Studies for the Cornet (English, German and French Edition) (Paperback)
Herbert L. Clarke is one of the most famous cornet soloists of all time. His lesson books have advanced the art of brass playing as much as anything else in brass literature. This book should be in every trumpet/cornet player's library, and it should be used on a regular basis to develop and maintain the player's technical skills.

Combined with Clarke's Characteristic Studies and Arban's trumpet method, the player will have enough of the right material to work on to the highest level of brass performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must!, April 16, 2003
This review is from: Technical Studies for the Cornet (English, German and French Edition) (Paperback)
This book is THE standard book for developing technical facility on the horn. The key to playing any instrument well is learning your way around the instrument, and this book is the best way to get there. Every serious trumpet player I have every met, including myself, has used this book and continues to use it. You will literally never outgrow this book. Go all the way through it, and then start over at the beginning at a faster tempo, and then do it again, and so on. If you use this book faithfully you will be astonished at how quickly your playing will improve. This book is one of the fundamental building blocks of playing the trumpet, no matter what style you play.

I am a student. My instructor is an outstanding professional, and he regularly gives me assignments from this book. I have been amazed how the exercises, if done correctly, have dramatically improved my skills on the trumpet. I highly recommend it.

This book is a NECESSITY for any serious trumpet player. (Also, the Arban's book is the absolute MUST HAVE Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet (Cornet) or Eb Alto, Bb Tenor, Baritone, Euphonium and Bb Bass in Treble Clef) The amount material in here is enough to keep you busy for years and years. I have personally been using this book since 9th grade and am now in my 30s. I recommend repeating exercises using various articulations, tonguing techniques, dynamics, octaves, etc. You will never outgrow this book. I find that the material in it can be used with almost any level player - from advanced beginner to professional. As a middle school director, I pick and choose different exercises and write them out for every band instrument. It helps everyone develop technical facility in ways not used in other methods.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my current needs., July 30, 2011

This review is from: Technical Studies for the Cornet (English, German and French Edition) (Paperback)
This book was reccommended to me by my new and current trumpet tutor, Glenn Bengry of Michigan. It is everything he said it would be. Enjoying practicing the exercises under Glenn's guidance. I am a 62 year old comeback trumpeter, having been off the trumpet since 1965. After not playing in over 46 years, with the exception of one period of a couple months in early '94, and then was without professional tutoring. I began studying the trumpet in beginner's band in school in 1959 or thereabouts, but quit just before my third year of high school was to begin, due to gum disease that resulted in all upper teeth being removed. I was just 16 years old.
Have been practicing since Nov '10, took my first trumpet lesson in Feb, '11, and just had my third lesson last Tues. I am committed to constantly working on improving my trumpet skills, with the goal of performing with bands on regular basis starting as soon as I'm ready.
Joined up with a local concert band last Nov., and have sat with them in rehearsal several times since, but haven't felt prepared enough to actually play yet. Feel now that I am getting very close to that day; have outstanding invitation to sit in with the band as often as I want, without any pressure whatsoever to actually play. Great bunch of people/musicians.

Highly recommend this book to any comeback trumpeter especially as a tool for getting back their trumpet skills, and improving them.
