5.0 out of 5 stars very powerful receiver with minimal distortion, H+ class cir, July 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Technics SA-AX730 Dolby Digital Home Theater Receiver (Electronics)
The Technics SA-AX730 is one of the most powerful and quality receivers. With its H+ class circuit amplification produce a clean, precise sound with a wide dynamic range and a minimal T.H.D (total harmonic distortion) 0.05% on rated power with all 5 channels driven (20Hz - 20Khz)and a damping factor of 30 (no need for more). With its Dolby Pro Logic processor you can enjoy a full surround music from 2 channel sources and a discrete 5.1 channel (AC-3) from a device containing Dolby Digital Decoder (its 6 channel input ready ) and most DVD players are equipped with Dolby Digital Processor. I strongly recommend this machine because of its nice design, quality of sound, and some uniqe extra features like the automatic cooling fan, the help function botton that gives a status information about the reciever and operating faults , the timer and alarm function and its capability to handle speakers from 4 Ohm to 16 ohm impedance. In addition; its "test" and "Delay" function for speaker adjustment and distance can optimize the sound for every room.
Do not forget the protection (cut off) circuit that protect the receiver from a possible damage when a shortcut or overload is happening.
The bottom line:
An amazing a/v receiver for both Music and Home theater with high end sound quality. worth every pinny!!
Enjoy the music....

3.0 out of 5 stars old standby, February 22, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Technics SA-AX730 Dolby Digital Home Theater Receiver (Electronics)
I have had a SA-AX730 for many years. It has always worked just fine. The main problems with it are lack of connectors for some of the more modern protocols such as HDMI, S-video, S/PDIF.

The manual has many diagrams which are much clearer than text. Unfortunately they don't give you specs on the various connections and cables you need, just rough illustrations of what they look like.

Perhaps when the unit was designed there were not so many possibilities.

None of the various stereo effects sound half decent. I wish I could just disable that feature entirely. People unfamiliar with the unit fiddle the "room effect" control and get horrible sound, not realising they have even made an error.

I wish most of the controls were not there, or could be set electronically and then frozen. They are just opportunities for novices fiddling with the stereo to screw it up. All I would like is a volume control, the input selector, and the FM station select accessible to the casual user. It is hard not to snap at someone who has screwed up the settings for the 100th time.

Even I screw the settings up if I try to use the unit in the dark.
