They could be better.,

In my opinion these are not very good speakers for the serious persuit of sound. Their cut out levels are way to low. They cringe at the very signal of bass. According to their supposed stats my reciever gave them less watts than sufficient yet they cut out constantly. The thing that gets me is the protection circuit cut out woofer output more than anything, like the highs could handle more than the woofer could. So if your serious about sound reproduction these are not for you.Thats all I have to say about that.

Technics is by far the best name in the business. That is why these speakers surprised me. They are terrible!

Good name, but they should stay out of the speaker business.,

I have owned Technics products for over 25 years. The quality and capabilities of their electronics, whether you look at Amplifiers, Receivers, Turntables, CD, tape or Equalizers have all been comparable with the biggest names in the business. Unfortunately, their loudspeaker/audio speaker systems have always been weak when compared to ANY other brand of home audio above the 'El-Cheapo' brands. This is something that was true when I first bought them, and it is true now, when I compare to the newest available. If you want good audio electronics, you can't go wrong with Technics... If you want good audio Speakers, look elsewheres.

the first thing i ask myself when i see something low cost is: "what's wrong with it?". My brother bought a pair of these and they sound pretty darn nice. i figured he spent around $400 on them. they have a nice bass output even when hooked up on the newer recievers. the tweeters also sound quite nice. so far i havent found anything wrong with them except that they can get scratched semi easily and that if you have to replace any of the drivers it would be a major pain

Alright, here's the deal. I purchased these speakers about 2 months ago, and though I would check out Amazon to see what other people thought. To my surprize, 3 out of 3 don't like them. I think they ROCK! Maybe if you're listening to Tchaikovsky or Beathoven, they don't hit the high notes as well as some...speakers, but for cranking up Metallica, AC/DC, Alice in Chains, or anything else written after 1960, THESE THINGS ROCK THE HOUSE! Just check out those woofers. You really can't go wrong!I'm out!

These speakers were purchased back in 2001, they are excellent in their reproduction of sound. I would recommend these to anyone. Primary music is jazz, with excellent bass. In fat the bass may be to strong for some taste. percussion from the Ventures to Dave Brubeck are incredible. I wish these were still available. Note: this is for SB-L50K, which were far better than 501's. These are driven 110 watt tube amp. and turntable in my setup. Even at their loudest, I have yet to experiene any distortion even after 10 yrs of listening.

Similair Technics Speakers,

I have a pair of Technics SB-SL501's that use the same type of drivers and such. The woofers themselves won't take much and I have already blown one out and I have pushed the other one woofer to hard and that resulted in damage to the woofer. The voice coil got seperated!! I don't like the overload protection on the tweeters and midranges, try and crank out Linkin Park and they go out. I find these speakers to be difficult and junky and to top it all off!! .... On the other hand Technics makes the best unbeatable turntables in the world but their speakers could use some more upgrading.
