5.0 out of 5 stars Mating, Birth, Rearing, May 9, 2007
As I only read the original German version, this is actually a comment on the original. I found it EXCELLENT, and I was happy to notice that it has now been translated into English. Assuming that the translation is good, I'd buy this book right now. The author, Mr. Fleig, is brilliant. However, one word of caution: the title of this book gave me the impression that it perhaps included information about how to choose dogs for mating, how to produce "better" dogs through genetics, etc. In my mind, that is a part of breeding. However, as the author, himself, states in his original version, if one is expecting information other than about mating, birth and rearing, he will need to look elsewhere (page 11 of the 5. Auflage 2004). Interestingly, the English edition seems to be missing about one half of the original (which is over 300 pages). This missing information apparently consists of epilogs in 1992, 1998 and 2001. Although, unfortunately, these "additions" don't seem to be included in the English version, the "meat" appears to be there. What did I like about the book? It is written clearly and professionally by someone who knows what they're talking about. It's not "dry." He talks from personal experience, and although his book is technical, it has a personal feel to it. You learn from it. His drawings and photographs are excellent. In fact, the well known dog scientist, Mr. E. Trumler, contributed a number of beautiful sketches rarely seen in books. If you want data, he's got graphs and tables. If you want to build a whelping box, he not only gives you the design and dimensions, but explains the purpose of the design in detail. He explains how to test the puppies, and includes, for example, the biotonus test from Eberhard Trumler, including photos. His information is relevant and well explained. Assuming none of this has been changed from the original, my advice is to buy this book. You can't go wrong, and it may just be the best book you can buy on this subject concerning dog mating, birth and rearing. For a comparison, "Breeding a Litter" by Beth J. Finder Harris, although a good book, doesn't come close to matching this book. Happy breeding.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so delighted with the book, July 3, 2001
By A Customer
My main problem with this book was that the author suggested breeding a male at 9 months. That is too early, with the number of genetic diseases in the various breeds, it is way too young to breed.

The nutrition information was good. Perhaps with all the new information available since this book was written, the author would change some of his advice. I sure hope so!
