From Library Journal
The current vogue for performing early music on period instruments and the concurrent interest in performance problems in that music make this book especially timely. A scholarly and dense work, it treats each topic in a highly detailed and technical manner. It is also comprehensive, covering the mechanics of both instruments and such aspects of performance as proper sitting position, fingering, ornamentation, accompaniment, etc. The author includes helpful examples, and his familiarity with the scholarly literature, both current and historical, is evident. Although intended as a performance manual, the book is best suit- ed to highly advanced performers. As a basic source book, however, it should be of value.
