A Good Approach to Better Control,
By A Customer
This review is from: Technique Patterns (Paperback)
This is a good book that really synthesizes ideas that are found in a couple of other books. Technique Patterns could be aptly retitled "Stick and Bass Drum Control." Having said that (and owning, using, and liking the other books), I'm still very glad I bought Technique Patterns. Chaffee is an excellent teacher, and just owning the book and CD is like buying some great drum lessons really cheap. Chaffee's demonstrations on the included CD are helpful in bringing the exercises to life, and giving the student an idea of how he or she should try to sound. But, for me, the BEST parts of the book are the author's excellent introductions to each section, explaining how to approach the exercises. AND they also explain why he wants you to do the exercises. If you want better mastery of your sticks and bass pedal, this can really help you to get there. If your self taught (like me) those explanations take a lot of the guess work out of learning technique exercises.

This review is from: Technique Patterns (Paperback)
I bought all of Gary Chaffe's linear books. My review here applies to all his works. I studied these patterns back in 1980. I'm now getting back into drumming after many years off. They are great to practice with. Very creative. Your limbs will become more independent. Look up Chaffee and see his history and famous students. My favorite drummer, David Garibaldi from Tower of Power, developed his style from These patterns. No matter your forte, you will be a better drummer if you study linear patterns!
