1.0 out of 5 stars Book does not live up to its title
If you are looking to learn about "astral combat," there is precious little about it in this book. What little there is of it is way arrogantly and cynically written. I found it to be a really negative book. It is supposed to be about promoting "life, health, and light," but man, is it negative stuff. The author is one negative unhappy dude. It's self-published too...

1.0 out of 5 stars Great for New Age, Poor for Sorcerors, January 3, 2003
By
Andrieh Vitimus "-AV" (Columbus, OH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Techniques of Astral Combat: An Analysis of the Astral Planes (Paperback)
I bought this book trying to better my astral combat skills. AbsoluteLY BY THIS book if you are a new ager, who thinks the world is light and just. This book is clearly meant for you to stay away from the astral side.

If you are a Black Magician, Shamen or Sorceror, read on why I do not like this book at all.

The book premise rests on the fact that nearly all spirits are vampiric... or feeding off energy. It disavows all shamenic knowledge and knowledge of spirits as "illusionary" and holds itself in the highest regard as having defending these people. If you ever do get a chance to meet a true shaman, you would see why they would laugh at this book. As a soceror, I did.

The basic premise of the books is that your physical form dictacts your "astral form" and leaves little interpretation. The book suggests a semi-monastic life of training and you continously see stories of their group being defeated.

The book has a few general things to say
1) if attacked run or be defeated
2) training (which in their case means physical) strengthens the coherence of form on the astral (this is partially true, but the premise is incomplete, see below).
3) if you can't handle this DO not get invovled

The problem here is that magick is a right, it should not be hid under the guise of fear and to dismiss all other traditions so readily towards such a materialist spiritualism is absurd.

Astral Dynamics seems a better book to start on this topic.
Now that said I strongly disagree with the book on several issues.
1) You need not be EXACTLY the same as your physical form on the astral and your physcial ailments do not impare you on the Astral if you do not let them. What I mean by this is, you can be anything you want to be on the astral but it takes mental and spiritual training to hold the new coherence(to use their language). One you practice this, it does get easier to hold alternate coherences on the astral side. I won't lie, it takes work.
2) Running is the path of the coward and is dishonorable. Fight, call for help if you need it, but running ... no
(ok, maybe a tactical retreat now and then). Generally, don't go into the astral areas you are not sure about if you can't defend yourself. If a area feels wierd, and you don't know how to fight yet, dont go on the astral plane there. Theres a story that certainly explains this in the book, although thats not the lesson they taught. In otherwords, be smart about it and know where you are at.

3) limiting yourself in the way this group has, inherently will cause the type of defeats they list in the book. Only by NOT limiting yourself and forcing you to push those boundaries do you gain strength since you realize you can do anything and only you hold yourself back.

Take it for what it is worth

3.0 out of 5 stars A Controversial Book, April 3, 2003
By
Ardane Steward (Fairbanks, Alaska) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Techniques of Astral Combat: An Analysis of the Astral Planes (Paperback)
As you can see from the reviews, people either love or hate this book.

I am a spiritual/astral warrior and studied as such in the Moser tradition. I have run Abode of the Lion warrior house for many years. I recommended these books to students for quite awhile, but have now withdrawn them from the book list.

The books are worth reading if you are experienced in astral travel and astral warriorship. You will have the necessary experience to evaluate the wheat from the chaff. And there are indeed little gems hidden in it here and there. However, there will also be quite a bit that will not jibe in any way with your experience in and of the astral. You will have to decide for yourself if this material is something new we don't know about yet, or if it is just a misunderstanding of the astral by the author.

I withdrew these books from my students book list because they ended up doing more harm than good. Simply put, there are far better books on the subject than this one. Also, the convoluted style and arrogant dogmatic attitude of the author resulted in more than one student putting down the book in disgust.

It is my opinion that these books should be taken as experimental research only. I would approach the techniques experimentally, and the philosophy as theoretical only. I would stick to the tried and true methods of astral work, and only experiment with the things in this book.

I have read these books several times. And honestly, the more I read them, the more doubtful I become of the material.

In my considered opinion this book is worth two and half stars, but I will give it three to be fair.

Best regards - Ardane Steward

1.0 out of 5 stars Thin Volume, Inaccurate Content, Arrogant Attitude, March 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Techniques of Astral Combat: An Analysis of the Astral Planes (Paperback)
This is the first of three self-published book by G. Travels by vanity publishing house I-Universe. It purports to be about the astral and "astral combat." Be aware that this is an extremely thin volume considering its high cost.

The author claims knowledge of the astral realms. And yet, virtually nothing he has to say on the subject jibes with any other published material. Indeed, actual astral travelers will find nothing familiar or recognizable in this book. One begins to wonder if perhaps the wrong book was put in this cover by mistake. It certainly has little to do with the astral as we know it.

As for the quality of the book and writing, it is poor. There are numerous typographical errors and misspellings. It does not appear to have been edited by anyone with a grasp on the English language. It is also written with an arrogant attitude, which is tiresome in the extreme.

The author does not brook any difference of opinion to his beliefs. There is only one truth, and it is his truth. His manifesto (published in the back) is written like a legal document wherein anyone who chooses a world-view other than the one expressed in his each stated belief (and I quote), chooses death. Is this a death threat? It certainly is written that way.

The subject is further confused by the authors penchant for using home-made jargon instead of universally understood terms. This jargon is ill-defined and creates additional layers of confusion. Being able to communicate clearly is a necessity in any would-be writer. But there is little of that virtue in this or the follow-up books. It only ends up being a confused convolution of faulty logic and lack of basic order.

As for "astral combat", astral combat and astral warrior groups are nothing new. Yet, the author presents the topic as if he represents the subject and is its originator. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are many different groups that do this sort of thing. It is surprising that someone so involved with this is so unaware of the many other groups and individuals doing it. The author is not the spokesperson for the spiritual or astral warrior community by any means, nor is he even a reliable source for information on the subject.

For example: G. Travels claims people have no immortal spirit. However, it is a virtually universally shared experience that upon first astral projecting, most everyone who does so is overwhelmed by the wonderful discovery that yes indeed, they are an immortal spirit that is only temporarily dwelling in a physical body. This one fact alone is proof positive that the author has probably never truly astral projected in his life. You can test the truth of this yourself. Simply learn to astral project and you will learn the truth of it.

In summation: this is a very thin volume, over-priced, poorly written, inaccurate, and arrogantly insulting of the community and subject it tries to falsely represent. These books do not serve the community, only the vanity of the author.

There are far more reputable and experienced writers on the subject, such as Stuart Wilde, Justice Barrymore, and the late Violet Firth and Christine Hartley.

2.0 out of 5 stars An ok book only because there are few others on the subject., November 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Techniques of Astral Combat: An Analysis of the Astral Planes (Paperback)
Astral Combat is a book on fighting dark entities in the astral realms. In fact, it is one of the few books other than Stuart Wilde's e-book, Gods Gladiators, that covers the subject.

There is way more theory than practice presented in the book, but anyone with at least a little knowledge of the astral will be able to put the information to practical use.

One of the book's weakness is that there no teaching of the spirit, only a teaching of a mortal soul (astral body) and mortal physical body. Thus it can be a very grim book at times. However, many astral travelers report that there is indeed an spiritual component to humankind, and this should be born in mind by any reader.

There is also a tendency on the authors part to present his views as the ONLY correct reality, no exceptions. For those who have had actual experience in the astral, it is clear that there is a greater truth than presented in this book.

Due to the magnitude of the current world circumstances, this book breaks an oath that has been kept for centuries in order to protect the enlightened souls that are helping the human race at a different dimensional level. The author explains the importance of our physical and astral bodies plus the need for us to keep them in optimum shape. I hope he writes more books soon to further enlighten us who truly care about our people and teach us more about the other worlds that affect us on all levels.

How can one explain this book? You've got to read it. I've never read a book that was so nuts and bolts-so effective in teaching--I learned to project right as they said so--and now, as they also said, I recognize the dangers inherent in it and I think it's probably too dangerous for me where I currently am. This book is an absolute must read.

1.0 out of 5 stars the techniques of astral combat, October 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Techniques of Astral Combat: An Analysis of the Astral Planes (Paperback)
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone; the author has a strange and disturbing view of matters. example: if you should see any kind of astral creature, you should get a physical exam immediately. Author believes that all paranormal experiences are the sign of poor health and a healthy individual would never have them. Are you kidding me? The author believes astral experiences fall into two categories: negative and/or illusionary. The author is only listed as G.Travels and says it is 'necessary' for him/her to remain anonymous. Hogwash. Use this book to line the birdcage.
