Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Recently, many studies have delivered warnings about long-term exposure to cell phone radiation and certain electromagnetic fields. But since these dangers can’t be seen by the naked eye, how can you protect yourself and your family? The CellSensor EMF Detection Meter measures both of these hazards with an easy-to-read gauge that also beeps and glows when high readings are detected. The CellSensor runs on one 9-volt alkaline battery (sold separately).

Please note: this product is intended to measure electric fields, and does not detect nuclear radiation.

Product Description

You might not know it, but certain areas in your home and work have powerful electro magnetic fields (EMFs) that can inflict severe damage to cellular DNA. Protect yourself against this invisible radiation by testing areas that you frequent with a gauss meter, a device that measures the strength of EMFs. Once you identify where EMF radiation hotspots are, simply avoid these areas. The accuracy of a gauss meter is easy to test. Just turn on your gauss meter and progressively walk towards a television set or any operating electrical device. You will see an immediate and consistent increase in the EMF measurement as you get closer to electrical devices, electrical wiring hotspots, and other surprising areas of your environment. Many people are unknowingly surrounded by powerful EMFs while they sleep. Their bed might be too close to an electric alarm clock, or they could be hit with EMFs that pass through the wall from a television set in the adjoining room. The solution is as easy as moving the alarm clock six inches further away from your head, or rearranging your bedroom furniture. A gauss meter often reveals surprises, such as the high EMF emissions from electric toothbrushes, shavers, microwave ovens, photocopy machines, cordless phones, and high-intensity electrical wiring. Once you know where the EMF hotspots are, just stay at a safe distance when the appliances are on. When using a regular corded or cordless phone, be sure to use the speakerphone option to avoid unnecessary exposure to EMFs. The Cell SensorTM is a handheld gauss meter that instantly measures EMFs from all sources. The Cell SensorTM is the only gauss meter on the market that can measure both cell phone radiation and electromagnetic fields (EMFs).

EMF Radiation Detector November 14, 2007

The Cellsensor was easy to use and helped find "hot spots" (where there is too much EMF radiation) and rearrange bed or furniture so we're not exposed to the hotspots.

Most culprits: Refrigerators, stoves, light dimmers, any kind of transformer/power adapter, outdoor power lines, fuse box. I don't think I need something more sophisticated for home use.

Home Contractors should have this.

Beware: An wall may show no EMF until the wires behind it carry a load (something is plugged into a socket that uses electricity).

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I bought this device to detect the radiation at my home, but despite it being named "cell sensor", I was unable to detect the cell phone signal from my iPhone 3G. I followed the direction, did the 90 degrees and 8 inch apart as described in the manual, put the probe next to the sensor, put it on the sensitive setting, and... detected nothing. Then during a call, I tried moving the cell phone in all angle combinations... nothing. I thought I had a defective unit, so I requested a replacement, got another brand new unit, and did the exact same thing. Nothing... the needle stays around 0. Same goes with wireless mouse and baby monitors. How do you make a "cell sensor" that doesn't sense a cell phone is beyond me.

On the other hand, this device works well detecting EMF from appliances such as refrigerator, microwave, lights, etc. Not sure it has really helped me avoid EMF energy other than confirm there's EMF emitting from electronic devices, and to stay 6 feet away from the microwave, but otherwise the level is so low typically that there's really not much that needed to be addressed.

If you plan to get this to detect EMF, it seems to work well, although I have nothing to compare it against. On the other hand, if you want to get one to detect wireless radiation, forget it.

Couple things I noticed about this device. First, it measures both RF (radio frequency) and ELF (extremely low frequency) together, with no way to test each individually. Second, it is NOT designed to measure cellphone tower radiation and will not detect them, only the close RF radiation of a cellphone. It couldn't really pick up on my 2.3 GHz cordless phone emissions either when it was sounding the dial tone, maybe that frequency was too high. But it wasn't designed for that either. It's sensitive to regular cellphones frequencies though. I also realized after buying, that since cellphones have to meet emission standards, there is not much point for me to measure its RF output other than to confirm it meets those standards... well, other than to see whether those things you stick onto cellphones to lower their RF actually works. Those are my only gripes.

Now, onto the good points. If you follow the instructions, this thing will indeed give you a decent approximation of the radiated power output of a cellphone. So it's true to advertised claims. Where this device shines is as an ELF meter for measuring the vibrating magnetic fields around clock radios, power lines, computers, appliances, and home wiring. I tested the frequency response and it measures best ELF fields between 30Hz and 900Hz, sensitivity rolling off greatly outside that range. On the "high" sensitivity setting, it even registers sudden movements of the probe, which I think is the CellSensor cutting the flux lines of earth's magnetic field. So if you shake/wiggle the probe in a given space, you can get a very rough idea of whether there's a DC magnetic field there. Like if you wiggle it just a little above a magnet the meter will go off the charts. So when you do your ELF readings, be sure to keep the probe still if you want to measure just the ELF fields of things nearby, otherwise you'll get a false reading generated by stationary magnetic fields.

So in summary, this was worth buying, but mainly only to measure nearfield cellphone emissions and ELFs from current-carrying devices. It won't work for detecting cell tower radiation, finding wifi hotspots, measuring wifi output, and it won't detect the strength of static magnetic fields unless you get creative and wiggle the probe. For those applications, I recommend a proper RF Signal Detector good for 50MHz to 6Ghz ( Professional Wireless RF Signal Bug Detector ), and for static magnetic fields look for a DC Gauss Meter.

I haven't tried to detect ghosts with it, but it probably also ought to detect EM disturbances caused by alien ships hovering over the house, haha.

Also useful for wiring detection
I won't echo what other reviewers have already written. I only can add that the sensor can be used as an electric cabling detector. Read more
