5.0 out of 5 stars Best football emulator, October 29, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Tecmo Super Bowl (Video Game)
This is simply one of the best nintendo games ever made, and the best football emulator of its time. Real time stat tracking, playing a whole season (with playoffs) either vs. the computer or your friends, and using real NFL teams/players, it was way way ahead of its time and is still as addictive now as it was then. Sure it has some goofy play aspects that are bogus in terms of "real football", but it's still a challenging skill game, and definitely a nostalgic favorite for anyone still using the original NES... either with the old TV game box or using an emulator online. This one set the bar for football emulators, and it still stacks up well with the new ones today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ever!, May 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tecmo Super Bowl (Video Game)
This is the best football game ever. It was well ahead of its day many years ago, and it is still fun to play today. For head to head competition, there has never been a better game to test a player's skills. The games of today play themselves too much. They just don't make them like this anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best football game ever, January 1, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Tecmo Super Bowl (Video Game)
Although video games have made giant leaps in technology and graphics since 1991, no video football game comes close to matching the ease of play and fun head-to-head action that Tecmo Super Bowl provides. It is also the grand-daddy to all football games that followed, as it has real pro rosters, allows for substitutions and play changes, and features multi-player full seasons. If you ever want to challenge yourself, try taking the 1991 New England Patriots to the Super Bowl.

5.0 out of 5 stars The grandfather of modern sports sims, January 12, 2009

This review is from: Tecmo Super Bowl (Video Game)
It's hard to believe that Tecmo Super Bowl was released in 1991 since it has held up incredibly well with age. I remember being in awe checking out a preview of this game in Nintendo Power magazine. Never before had video gamers seen a console game that combined real teams, real players, a full season & full stat tracking for the entire year. All of this was combined with a similar fun game play style that the original Tecmo Bowl possessed.

Current sports sim franchises (MLB 2k series, Madden, NHL, et al) took these features, incorporated them into their lineup, and expanded on Tecmo's innovations. Today we have dynasty modes & GM careers...in 1991 we had one season of stat tracking. Sports & video game fanatics such as myself played multiple seasons and compiled multiple seasons worth of statistics by hand. It was a long & tedious process that is so much easier in current releases, but that simple charm is missing.

Graphics: Tecmo did not possess great graphics, even by 8 bit standards. While the players were not horrendously detailed, they were simply "there." In-game animations were adequate and nothing more. The cut scenes were a highlight- score a touchdown, kick a field goal, sack the quarterback- then sit with pride as the simple animation kicked in.

Sound: Repetitive music, quarterbacks that say "hut" forever before the snap, and crowd noises that sounded more like television fuzz- all these things were reasons why I would listen to the radio while playing this game. Thanks Tecmo for helping me become a fan of bands such as Nirvana & Soundgarden. Yes, the music was weak in TSB.

Gameplay: TSB excelled in its playability. It was easy enough for a beginner to pick up & play, yet later in a season the computer difficulty ramped up to test even the most seasoned Tecmo veteran. Dodging tackles was simple since your players could stop and turn on a dime. Although unrealistic, that was part of this game's appeal. It allowed for sports fans and non sports fans alike to enjoy this game.

Features: As stated earlier, this was one of the first games to have such depth with full season stat tracking, injuries & substitutions. That alone gave TSB such replay value. How many touchdowns can you throw with Dan Marino? How many rushing yards can you pile up with Barry Sanders? Can you take the lowly Colts or Patriots to the promised land of the Super Bowl? With a full list of AFC & NFC teams to choose from, a player's replay value was nearly limitless.

Any football fan who played video games in the early 90s will most likely reminisce fondly of his/her days playing Tecmo Super Bowl. Ask one of those individuals for an association and you may hear, "90 yard touch down passes....breaking 20 tackles on a run with Bo Jackson....winning 70-0....nose tackle dives for a sack." Certainly this is video game nostalgia for us NESers. Younger players who did not get into video games until more recent systems should give this a shot, if only to see the evolution of sports sims & pay homage to the grandfather of them all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tecmo Super Bowl, December 27, 2001

This is the best football game for the original Nintendo. Sure the game is over 10 years old, but many people still play this game today. The graphics are about as good as can be expected from the old nintendo system. You can probably play an entire season over a single weekend if you want to. Those looking to escape the over-done realism of today's football games, that take months to complete, would like this easy pick-up-and-play football game.
Quick run-down of the game.
You have control one of the 26 NFL Teams. Remember this is a game with NFL rosters and teams from 1991. You can control more than one team if you like. You can also simply coach a team and let the computer play it out, but that is pretty non-interactive.
You can design a personal team playbook with up to 8 plays.(4 pass 4 run). When you pick a defense you have to pick one of the 8 plays to defend. Your defense will respond depending on what play you call. (If you call a run defense against a pass play you might get burned). Another weird thing is that the offensive skill players ie: quarterback, runningbacks, receivers, can get injured. But none of the lineman, defensive players, or kickers can get injured. Also your players will be faster, break more tackles, and make more big plays depending on their health status ie: bad,average,good,very-good, and excellent. Once you get the hang of the gameplay it is pretty easy to light it up against the computer, so don't look to be playing this game for months on- end. This game is probably best enjoyed with a group of friends, as there are much better one player football games out now. But this game is probably the best of the 2-D football games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest NES game of all time, May 26, 2006

Ok,if ur into sport games, heres the main start of em all. Was it the first, no, but this is the most influencial(dont mind the spelling if I'm wrong). Tecmo Super Bowl is the game most gamers today will remember forever. Endless hours of fun gameplay, whole season options, stats, and oh yea, INJURIES. The greatest part of this is seeing ur injured player off the field, then a few games later ur recovered player hops out of the hospital and even gets waved to as he leaves. As silly as that seems its the first sports game i can recall with an injury option in it. This game is still most enjoyed with buddies playing multiple player seasons(oh yea, u can control as many teams as u want throughout the season), running for 200 yards a game or just tossing it 70 yards down the field for the long ball. Outdated, yes, over the edge, probably a little but still the greatest sports if not NES game ever. I assure you if ur a younger gamer and want to know where all the sports franchise games got their idea i strongly suggest this game. Would score this a 10 star if possible because its that fun, that good and that damn addicting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Face down, hut hut hut hut, June 30, 2011

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Tecmo Super Bowl (Video Game)
This my friends is the definitive football game, probably the greatest video game period. When my brother went away to college in 1990, one of the first things he discovered was...(HINT: it wasnt big tattaed women) but rather the NES. After playing the NES for several years, I'd say the NES is even better than smashing out some broad.
And when you think of the NES, you think of one video game and that would be Tecmo Super Bowl (face down, hut hut hut hut).
When this game came out I was only 8 and my brother was working at a grocery store that my Dad's friend was a manager at. The friend later passed away and his wife moved in with his good friend but that's beside the point. Money was tough to come by, but the one thing we wanted was TSB (and Cool Ranch Doritoes, which along with the TSB was one of reasons I was so fat as a kid. So my brother talked to an employee at Gamer's Paradise about buying TSB.
The employee said they had three TSBs left and that if my brother put down a $5 deposit he would hold one of the games until my bro got paid by the store where my brother worked at cause he got a job from my dad's friend who later passed away but his wife moved in with his old friend.
When we first played TSB it was like love at first sight. In fact, I'd have to say my first date with TSB was better than my first dates with any of my 3 GFs...at least TSB gave me that happy ending, FV, J-O Hello?
I took the Jets and my bro took the Browns, my gawd did we love this game. We met in the TSB Super Bowl once. This time I was the Cardinals and my bro was the Jets. We even invited our parents to watch. I beat my brother something like 48-6 and then said to him "Try a little harder next time." He started a fight and this all took place on X-Mas Day, when my parents got me the Saved by the Bell board game (oh Kelly Kapowski, Hello!)
After I bought a 72-pin connector for my old NES we played one final season. I was the Jets and my bro was the Bucs with Vinny Testeverde. He lost in the first round of the playoffs and I lost to the 9ers in OT in the Super Bowl. It was a lot.
In conclusion, this game rocks balls. It is so worth purchasing. I wish it was 1991 again...still 10 years before we would see the evil of 2011, when Matt Stairs joined the Cubs! (Ha, you thought I was going with an 11/9 reference didnt you?)
Anyhow, this is prob the best game ever made. Awesome game that will always give you a happy ending, unless ur my bro in the X-Mas day Super Bowl. Holla. Go Djokovic!

5.0 out of 5 stars 20 Years Later, Still the Greatest Football Game Ever Made., February 9, 2011

John Doe (Somewhere in New Jersey) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Tecmo Super Bowl (Video Game)
What else can be written about Tecmo Super Bowl if nothing else more can be written? Simply put, if you are thinking of getting a NES console or wanting to play it again, it is always because of Tecmo Super Bowl. That's the demonstration of its excellence. There is no competition when it comes to being the best football game ever made on any platform: Tecmo Super Bowl is numero uno in raw gameplay and sheer fun. If you thought Tecmo Bowl was the best, Tecmo Super Bowl is way, way ahead of its time and is vastly improved over its predecessor. Many new features are added in Tecmo Super Bowl: onside kickoffs, injuries, fumbles, spur-of-the-moment graphics, association of players to his real team, statistics, player changes, playbook changes, more plays used, saving, pro bowl game, preseason, in-look of player's attributes, and playoffs including divisional records. The only complaint I could think of is that it needs to have a 2 point conversion. I am ok with the lack of trades of players, but it makes the game harder. Of course, I wish some of the players' names would be mentioned such as Randall Cunningham, Jim Kelly, and Bernie Kosar (it's so trivial today when it comes to trademarks back then). Everybody knows it was Randall Cunningham when he threw a 56 yarder touchdown pass to Calvin Williams. All in all, Tecmo Super Bowl was the greatest football game back then, and today, nothing has ever changed.
