I rely on Tecnu products, but you need to know how to use them. "Tecnu Extreme" has pumice or some sort of gritty scrubbing stuff in it that will make your EXISTING RASH WORSE. As we all know, scratching the rash makes it worse. Any abrasive will make it worse.

Tecnu Extreme is VERY EFFECTIVE at removing the toxic oils just after exposure, before you get a rash. The nice thing is you don't have to rub it in as long as original Tecnu and you can use it with water, unlike original Tecnu. So, you can wash yourself down 3 times in the shower if you're really paranoid.

It will remove the oils after you get a rash too, but the grit will scratch your skin and make the rash worse (though keep it from spreading hopefully). I know from experience, and any doctor or pharmacist will tell you this.

So, if you just got exposed and are in a mad dash to wash everything off, use Tecnu Extreme. If you already have broken out, use original Tecnu. They both remove the urshiol oil, but original Tecnu will soothe the rash AND remove the oils. I have used all the natural "soaps" out there and they really do not work. Tecnu works and I keep both varieties stocked at all times.

My house is located on a partially wooded 2 acre lot. It seems the woods are always trying to encroach on the lawn and poison ivy leads the way. So no matter what I do, whether taking a walk in the grass, mowing the lawn or gardening, the poison ivy always seems to get me every year! I used to suffer for weeks on end before I found the Tecnu product line. For example, recently I did some weeding by the pool and I removed a healthy patch. Even though I used gloves I woke up the next day with my right forearm covered in a rash. I went to the store and bought a tube of Tecnu Extreme and followed the directions and to my amazement it reduced the rash to almost nothing and the itch was eliminated to a great degree too. That was $15 well spent.

I live in Central California and our rural property is covered in poison oak. Due to having to clear land for wildfire season, I have no choice but to work in it. I am very sensitive to poison oak, but have worked now for 6 weekends with no symptoms, after having had some bad run-ins. Here is what I do:

Before dressing: put something on my skin to help keep the oil from bonding in case it gets through. I actually use waterproof sunscreen, even on areas which will be under clothing, in case any oil gets through.

Dress well: I wear ordinary sneakers, with two pairs of heavy socks. I wear two layers of pants: a pair of cotton warmups underneath some fatigue-type pants. A long-sleeve cotton shirt. For gloves, I bought the heavy rubber chemical-resistant-type (facilitates cleanup) and the oil cannot soak through.

Timing: If you "know" you are exposing yourself to poison oak, do not do it for more than 2-3 hours, just in case any gets through.

Clean-up: The FIRST thing you should do is have a can of mineral spirits (paint thinner) and a rag. As others have noted, the oil is like a lacquer that dries on your skin and won't wash off with soap and water. Start by soaking the rag and cleaning any tools you used. I used to use Tecnu to clean my tools, but I realize that's not necessary, the paint thinner works just fine. Now wipe your gloves without taking them off. Next, wipe down your shoes. Pull off your shoes, then gloves before you go into the house. Next, go straight into the laundry room and as you undress, everything needs to go straight in. I have found that using ordinary detergent and hot water cleans everything just fine. Mix lights and darks, who cares, these are just your work clothes, right?

I tried this product about 10 days into my moderate case of poison ivy. I had tried hydrocortisone cream with no relief, and was just starting full strength tea tree oil the day before my purchase which showed some promise but I was ready for something that could help get this over with sooner, the reviews here convinced me to give this a try. Here is what I experienced:

1. Within hours the rash areas felt like they were calming down, I was no longer crawling out of my skin...the next day I saw some drying of the rash, and within three days it was clearing up and the itching was gone. Please keep in mind my rash was over a week old anyway and I might have been on the verge of healing but there is no doubt that this product worked. I also applied the full strength tea tree oil to the rash once a day for a few days, but the scent is unpleasant and I stopped as soon as I could see it was going away. I think these two products in conjunction work well together. I am now using this product once a day, I was doing it twice a day in the beginning.

2.This product has two purposes, it is to be used to wash off newly exposed skin areas before the rash begins, and to be used after exposure on the rash. In my case I used it for the rash only. The tube says it stops itching in 15 seconds. I didn't find that to be the case but I did find it soothing and it did reduce the itching within a few hours. I also used their anti-itch spray. I will say I liked that product but didn't find it helped too much with the itching, and it moisturizes the skin which might be good in early stages of the rash but I found I didn't want to use it when I finally got my rash to dry up.
