I rely on Tecnu products, but you need to know how to use them. "Tecnu Extreme" has pumice or some sort of gritty scrubbing stuff in it that will make your EXISTING RASH WORSE. As we all know, scratching the rash makes it worse. Any abrasive will make it worse.

Tecnu Extreme is VERY EFFECTIVE at removing the toxic oils just after exposure, before you get a rash. The nice thing is you don't have to rub it in as long as original Tecnu and you can use it with water, unlike original Tecnu. So, you can wash yourself down 3 times in the shower if you're really paranoid.

It will remove the oils after you get a rash too, but the grit will scratch your skin and make the rash worse (though keep it from spreading hopefully). I know from experience, and any doctor or pharmacist will tell you this.

So, if you just got exposed and are in a mad dash to wash everything off, use Tecnu Extreme. If you already have broken out, use original Tecnu. They both remove the urshiol oil, but original Tecnu will soothe the rash AND remove the oils. I have used all the natural "soaps" out there and they really do not work. Tecnu works and I keep both varieties stocked at all times.

My house is located on a partially wooded 2 acre lot. It seems the woods are always trying to encroach on the lawn and poison ivy leads the way. So no matter what I do, whether taking a walk in the grass, mowing the lawn or gardening, the poison ivy always seems to get me every year! I used to suffer for weeks on end before I found the Tecnu product line. For example, recently I did some weeding by the pool and I removed a healthy patch. Even though I used gloves I woke up the next day with my right forearm covered in a rash. I went to the store and bought a tube of Tecnu Extreme and followed the directions and to my amazement it reduced the rash to almost nothing and the itch was eliminated to a great degree too. That was $15 well spent.

I tried this product about 10 days into my moderate case of poison ivy. I had tried hydrocortisone cream with no relief, and was just starting full strength tea tree oil the day before my purchase which showed some promise but I was ready for something that could help get this over with sooner, the reviews here convinced me to give this a try. Here is what I experienced:

1. Within hours the rash areas felt like they were calming down, I was no longer crawling out of my skin...the next day I saw some drying of the rash, and within three days it was clearing up and the itching was gone. Please keep in mind my rash was over a week old anyway and I might have been on the verge of healing but there is no doubt that this product worked. I also applied the full strength tea tree oil to the rash once a day for a few days, but the scent is unpleasant and I stopped as soon as I could see it was going away. I think these two products in conjunction work well together. I am now using this product once a day, I was doing it twice a day in the beginning.

2.This product has two purposes, it is to be used to wash off newly exposed skin areas before the rash begins, and to be used after exposure on the rash. In my case I used it for the rash only. The tube says it stops itching in 15 seconds. I didn't find that to be the case but I did find it soothing and it did reduce the itching within a few hours. I also used their anti-itch spray. I will say I liked that product but didn't find it helped too much with the itching, and it moisturizes the skin which might be good in early stages of the rash but I found I didn't want to use it when I finally got my rash to dry up.

I get horrible poison oak all year. I have tried regular Tecnu, which stops it if you're early, benadryl, hydrocortisone, calamine, oak'n'ivy (moderately effective), but finally this! It is AMAZING. I had gotten another rash, a few days in, all gooey and swollen and awful. I was desperate to try something new and someone recommended this. I get it often enough to know this was going to be a long painful three weeks, but this stuff STOPPED the rash and it's nearly healed in 3 DAYS instead! (skin still has to finish growing back but it's dry and not itchy or sore or swollen)

RE: homeopathic- I think the key ingredient here is the grindelia 3X. It's more "herbal" than "homeopathic" since 3X is 1 part per thousand, still a potentially effective amount. (Imagine what 1 part per thousand of ushuriol could do to you- certainly non-trivial damage!) (Most "homeopathic" remedies that are less than 1 part per trillion, quadrillion, etc.- statistically improbable that any of the original plant molecules make it to the end products.)

I am in the middle of enduring a nasty case of poison ivy, mainly located on my forearms. After using calamine, cortisone cream, and Benadryl gel with not much lasting relief, I tried the first other thing I found on the pharmacy shelf.

I didn't really read the bottle very closely-- if I had, I probably would not have purchased it. I didn't see the word "homeopathic" until after I got home and tried it out. I put homeopathy in the same category as astrology and other pseudo-sciences. But to my great surprise, this stuff actually quelled the itching and burning pretty quickly after application.

I still don't believe in the theory behind homeopathy, attributing whatever its claimed "successes" are to the placebo effect. Yet whatever else they put in this stuff apparently has helped my otherwise-intractable rash quite nicely.
