A play version of "The Frontiersmen", March 24, 2008
Allan W. Eckert's Magnum opus is a book entitled "The Frontiersmen". This edition is the "play version" (written in a format for actors to study) of that work. Of course, this means that this volume is also a huge diminution of "The Frontiermen," which is the book that you'll wish to read to get the story in its entirety.
"Tecumseh!" has been performed for many years (and still is) at the Sugarloaf Mountain Outdoor Drama Amphitheater near Chillicothe, Ohio. While the number of actors utilized to convey this dramatic and historic tale has been much reduced over the years (expenses), the play is still well-worth seeing. When the black powder cannon unexpectedly fires just a few feet behind you and the Shawnee Indians practically leap over your shoulder on their galloping horses (if you're on the sidelines), you will definitely remember this renowned theater experience.
Tecumseh was a visionary Shawnee warrior who worked endlessly to unite all the various tribes of the Ohio Country for the central purpose of extracting the White invaders from the traditional Native American Indian hunting grounds. Of course, his plan was doomed from the onset but, still, the story of his activities and philosophy is quite impressive.
To finalize, if you're really into plays, you might wish a copy of this slightly enlarged paperback. If you want the whole story, buy "The Frontiersmen," which I highly recommend.
