1 Teddy Bear: A Counting Book (Boxer Concept Series)

This was the first book my son took a real interest in, right around his first birthday. He is now 21 months, and we still read this at least twice a day. The pictures are sweet and simple for the youngest toddler, yet there are lots of little details that you can point out and discuss as your child's vocabulary and attention grow. For example, the last page is "10 teddies, snuggled in bed," and they are all doing something different: one is reading a book, one is climbing up on the bed, one has a little boy doll he is hugging, some are already asleep and some are awake, etc. On most pages the bears are arranged in a layout that makes the number concept intuitive, i.e. eight bears is two rows of 4. The rhyming text is also simple, but not so vacant that you hate the sound of yourself reading it repeatedly. ;) And the teddies are just so so CUTE without being sappy. I'm a teacher, and I think this book does a perfect job of solidly presenting concepts in a fun and aesthetic way. A great first birthday gift.
